I recently had some discussions with people on this very topic…
The consensus was that being careful of wording and avoiding the actual term ‘militia’ with a group might be best given the FBI/CIA/ATF/“insert alphabet soup here” being scared of groups, watchlists, blacklists…
Don’t wanna be labeled as an “extremist organization:” name your group something very tame and keep a low profile when it comes to specific emergency plans…
I was in two militias. One was run by a ego-maniac and the other was filled with so much drama I quit. I did get some really good training in the 2nd one though but it became a soap opera. If you join one really vet it. Ask questions and talk to people. if you form one keep it tight knit with people you know and trust.
But ironically, the courts have ruled that you can dress up like agents of the federal government by wearing real military uniforms, because “free speech.”
Don’t call it a Militia…don’t wear camo or stuff like that. Learn first aid and map and compass. Avoid any sort of political feelings online. Call yourself a shooting club. Nothing illegal about a bunch of people shooting their guns and learning first aid.
I joked last time, but I’m seriously thinking about starting the Man Scouts. I’m not sure if it would make a better club for adults, or a better sitcom.
haha, I wish the left would quit taking things personally, and at the same time, with the right would quit being so provocative with the jokes/rude insults/slurs.
IMO just being an American Citizen makes you part of the greatest militia known to planet earth, reinforced by the 2nd Amendment…the forming of any other militia within this great militia is divisive.
We must instead figure out how to align ourselves and act accordingly.
I am partial to forming a “Hunt Club” a group of like minded individuals that get together and recreate in the off season to keep our “hunting skills” sharp. One must have a club house on land which allows hunting and a range to ensure the Hunt Club members ability to take a game animal ethically and legally. After all EVERYBODY knows the 2nd amendment is about hunting. Then during hunting season we ensure that our “Hunting Guns” are properly tended to and accurate. EVERYBODY knows that unless you continually check the accuracy of your firearms they will become inaccurate. EVERYBODY knows that pistols should be carried for protection from various vermin such as snakes, bears, feral pigs and feral dogs so we must also practice with them.
When I was going for my CCW in NY (and yes it was as painful as they say), the Judge asked me why I would need to carry a pistol while hunting and hiking. My answer was what you said for hiking and for hunting is case there was a bad shot and the animal was in distress.
@Marcus64 That is a great line … um I mean idea … um I mean thoughtful and well presented statement to prevent cruelty to animals in the event of a poor shot on game. We all want game animals to be taken legally and ethically but some times stuff happens and a pistol is an excellent option. If it gets you a CCW on the street too so much the better.
hey Craig6, speaking very frankly it was the truth (like you said things happen), and the Judge was rather impressed by the answer (he himself said he didn’t hunt but was a avid fisherman) . As far as on the street…limited. NY has levels. I didn’t qualify for “full” carry, I was allowed to carry to and from the range, shooting competitions, hiking, camping and hunting.
Does walking from one city block to another count as hiking? It’s been a minute since I’ve been in NYC but them blocks are long and infested with dangerous animals.
I left NJ in 1985 and went back when I graduated boot camp and sub school. Went into a sporting goods shop in Toms River and asked to see a rifle on the wall. I needed a “gun card”, I produced my military ID and the vet behind the counter shook his head and told me that didn’t count. He was kind enough to point out all the bits I had questions on but would not let me handle it. Drove me snake $h!t crazy. Been in VA ever since, other than funerals or weddings I don’t go back. I wasn’t born in the south but I got here as quick as I could.
“as all the ones I have seen have an agenda that I can’t get behind”
What ‘agenda’ are you wanting to get behind? You already are part of the militia. This war will not be fought by any branch of our military. It will be fought by us, the militia…which includes veterans, non-veterans, all Americans, preferably those with firearms. You don’t need an agenda…all you need to do is defend the Constitution.
One that isn’t a poorly veiled reason for a bunch of thugs to get their violence on. That isn’t racist.
One that is basically like the military. Or like the animal rescue I was part of. Whenever a natural disasters would hit. Usually, Tornadoes or Hurricanes. We would mobilize and head for that spot. We supplied our own gear and our own supplies meet up and go behind the areas where humans had already been rescued from and we would rescue the pets and such that were left behind.
I would usually be one of 2 divers per rhibbie that we had. We had one guy that had a semi and an extra trailer that over time we turned into a full on veterinarian surgery. Volunteers from Auburn and Troy’s Vet program would man it. Other people would drive the animals to a centralized gathering spot, we would check for tags, implants, tattoos or other identifiers, keep them quarantined for 2 months and keep them for another 2 month to try and find their owners.
After Katrina, we rescued something like 700 pets, 100 wildlife creatures. All were either returned to their owners, or rehomed.
But a militia that did something like that. When civil disorder got out of hand to be their as a backup.
Specifically replying to the last paragraph, but quoted all of the relevant information to keep context intact……
With the fact that our current VP and presidential candidate encouraged civil discourse and rioting…. And that her running mate opened his windows to smell the burning rubber as the city he governed burned in those riots……
