It's 1941, what'll you do? A thought exercise

Ammunition and small arms of every kind are unavailable because of the war effort.
As far a guns go, what you have right now is…all you have.
Could be grandpappy’s Goose gun or a battlefield souvenir Luger from WW1
The same for ammunition----maybe a half box of shotgun shells, a half dozen deer cartridges left over from last season, and a box of .22lrs (there’s an economic Depression going on, remember?)
You’re too old or too young to enlist, or maybe you’re frozen in your job for the duration.
What will be your course of action, and why?

Just in case History repeats itself.

First, it is repeating :exclamation:
Second and unfortunately we’re not going do a damn thing.
How do I know this, because it’s already 1942!
We’re going to meme about it even when they replace the AMERICAN FLAG on the Capitol building!
If we haven’t stopped the push by now, we never will! I’ve accepted the fact that we are already dead! It’s the only way to survive the coming onslaught!

Because we’re reliving it, my course of action is on a need to know basis only! Communications have been compromised, the country has been infiltrated!

When I was working in Europe, I had a French lawyer who told me about his grandfather’s rifle that he carried in WWI. Seems the French government required people to turn in the “weapons of war” their families may have retained after all the conflicts that swept France (Franco-Prussian war, WWI, WWII).

His family reluctantly turned in the rifle. I would not,

Last time I had my ID checked, I stated it was fake and that I am actually older. The cashier was a bit confused at first. :sunglasses: Stupid stores that want everyone to show ID for alcohol purchases.

I can do my part with what I have right now. Who else can?

My eldest has orders to pick up my rifle when I fall and to put it where it can best be used.

Have a good stock of components to reload what I have. One of my friends once told me, when I started reloading that I had enough already to take over a “small Carribbean island”. Lately, he upgraded that to
“large South American” country.

I think we all need to be constantly prepared with the basics. Defensive tools, food, fuel (energy), shelter, comms and transportation (and meds if you need them). These all should be on hand for a month or more of total disruption, and ready to go with no warning. If you can put together more than a month or two, fantastic.

As for me, I don’t have a big arsenal (actually, since that awful boating accident I’m unarmed), but if the situation in the original post played out, I’d be glad I prepared with a few reliable handguns and and rifles. Prepare now, so you aren’t stuck with a single old goose gun and a couple shells.

Ammo is expensive, so we all should be checking for deals and stocking up when we can. I make it a point to train carefully and smartly, not just dumping lead down range for the fun of it so I’m not wasting my ammo. I always want my stock growing; I’m careful to always buy more than I shoot everytime I buy, so my total inventory is always going up.

Basically, what I’d do is take stock of the situation. Hopefully I’d only need my ammo to defend against individual attackers and not an invading army. Plan and ration, just like you will your food and water. Use it wisely, and start making a plan based on the circumstances.

Plan A is to survive the first month or two, and make Plan B during that time, depending on the fluid situation. Plan B could be absolutely anything.
