Instructor Notes: Failed Qualifying

I’m interested in exploring this further. BTW I am practising hard but still suck! My wife and i started with a G17 she was much better than I. With our old eyes we tried red dot, massive difference. Now best part of a year on I still find, when first pointing the glock that it is always pointed below the target, so I’m using the dot to lift it onto the target.
Now with Taurus G2c it naturally (to me) points directly on target. I hit about as well with both. Not really sure why. I suppose it must be the grip angle to the barrel.
So do others here have similar experience ?

When I was a LEO I had to qualify with my CC backup .32 Seecamp in order to carry it. NO sights at all. Had to use the sunlight glinting off the stainless steel barrel to sight. I did it, but it wasn’t easy.

I have a LCP.380 also. I have been able to hit accurately to 10 yards out using just the factory milled sights that I enhanced with bright dayglow sight paint. Using it frequently at the range also solidified my accuracy with a laser to greater distances. But I would hold off after 50 feet in a situation under duress even with the laser.

I would say 10 yards also brother @Robert292 and I say even with the model that has the laser your pushing it at more than 15 to 20 yards. I love my LCP II also.

I don’t consider it my job to pass the students, but to teach, instruct, and evaluate them. If a student insists on using a POS gun or one that they can’t accurately shoot, I don’t provide them a gun. My thinking is that they will then carry the gun they can’t shoot and be a menace to society. I encourage people to buy a gun that works for them and not for the convenience of carrying or what the gun store has. But, most times it is too late by the time they come to class. As for using a .22 for qualification, I discourage it. Most people won’t or shouldn’t be carrying a .22 for defense and need to be able to shoot a reasonable caliber to pass a qualification class.

As a CWP instructor in the state of South Carolina, I’ve seen this play out as well. I had a lady who showed up with her Ruger LCP .380, that she had never shot and expected to qualify. I agree that this weapon had sights that are vary hard to pick up and see. This is a pocket pistol, use for short range point and shoot self-defenses. Shooting at targets 10 yard and beyond will be difficulty without painting on a front sight on the blade. Even then you need to practice with this weapon. I agree also that for someone with a medium or big hand the grip of the weapon will make target shooting difficult. I have one myself that I carry when i want to pack really lite. I understand the limitations with this weapon and don’t consider it my EDC. I cringe when these weapons show up. I hope that soon she returns to attempt to re-qualify. I will try to discourage her from shooting the LCP and offer her a rental 9mm.

Same here with the paint. It helped. Have the laser on a second gun, Great for night time and getting that extra distance.

Welcome to the family! @Jeffrey119 glad you’re here! I also carry a .380, though it’s my edc.

@Enzo_T , yes and yes. I teach the DSF and am a firm disciple of Kinesthetic (isosceles) Alignment. Using this stance was how he hit at 3 yards. This by far is the best stance for hitting your target at any distance.
Just to re-emphasize, there is no way this person was going to qualify out to 45 feet.
As a pocket pistol at 9 feet, fine, that works.

@Jeffrey119 Cringe… yep, and the thought of all the hard work the dude did in class (CCHD) and than at the end of the day not to qual because of his equipment, yipes.

@Terrence8 Hey, everyone has their own teaching style. My job is to teach the class (USCCA’s Concealed Carry & Home Defense) in a way and manner that will set my students up for success. In the end, the student understood why he should probably not use the LCP380 as his EDC. I didn’t setup him up by telling him prior to even firing the first round, that his firearm was maybe not the preferred firearm to qual with or have as his EDC. After running a handful of the drills as part of the CCHD course, and even borrowing the Dynamic Deviation Drill from DSFI to do circles around your target, his grouping was , lets just say, super bad.

The second he put the alternate firearm in his hand, he hit the X 20 times at 3yds 20 times at 7yds and 9.5times at 15yds. So he had the grip, stance, and trigger control down. He succeed, mission accomplished.

He emailed me yesterday and said that both he and his wife will be carrying a .22 cal as EDC’s for now. I told him that’s fine. Whatever is comfortable for him and his wife. He asked what .22 would I recommend, the Browning 1911/22. He also signed up for Defensive Shooting Fundamentals (DSF).

and for the people who say “it’s only a .22,” please hold the paper target in front of yourself while I shoot at it.
It’s my opinion that no one wants to get shot, even by a .22.

Agree completely. Having taught a lot of new shooters, I have to say the biggest mistake any of them make is choosing the wrong firearm. And sadly, in spite of all the hype, pistols like the the Ruger LCP 380 and larger 9mm, along with other DAO pocket pistols are extremely difficult to shoot for new shooters and really not as good as pistols like a simple Taurus G2s that has a much better grip, sights and trigger.
