I looked up EMP on these pages but could not find a recent EMP topic.
As Tom206 recently shared ‘in the event of an EMF, none of the electronics, including automotive computer modules - would be useful if not in a Faraday cage’.
I’ve seen some Faraday products, got a mini one for my bro last Christmas, but for his car remote key fob.
I read that some EMP’s have occurred naturally from unpredictable sun or solar/space phenomena.
How else can we protect our devices and cars? Do you have tips for making your own lower cost faraday protective cage?
Does keeping the batteries out of the device - prevent and EMP damage to either the device or batteries? Are any devices immune, ie, hand crank or solar powered devices?
Tips or suggestions to prevent EMP damage?
“EMP stands for electromagnetic pulse, and basically refers to a huge burst of electromagnetic energy on a scale that is likely to interfere with, or permanently damage, any electronics that it comes into contact with.”
This isn’t an answer in as much as it is me just saying I agree in with you about the importance of having Faraday Cage capabilities,
You can wrap an electronic in foil for some protection. It has to be completely covered by the aluminum foil and the more layers the better. I have what I consider “mission critical” devices that I keep the device and the related accessories stored in individual Faraday Cages. As a for instance , I have a tablet with extensive outdoor lore on such as homeopathic recipes, using medicinal herbs and plant identification of such plants that are considered edible. Same with fungi/mushrooms. I have a fire making kit I keep a plasma lighter and other stuff related to fire making in.
“Addendum:” If you keep your phone in a Faraday Cage or wrap it correctly, it can no longer be gathering passive information or broadcasting your location.
“Addendum:” In recent years Cell Phones have been been the subject of contested cases and the usage of biometrics to access your phone. Courts have ruled both ways concerning biometrics such as your fingerprint or facial recognition and whether it is 4th Amendment protected . But have been, relatively, united in saying that the act of typing in a password for access is a protected by the 5th Amendment. So I don’t use biometrics.
Most, if not all new cars would be harmed by an EMP. The reason is that they make wider use of micro circuitry AND today’s micro circuitry is MUCH more sensitive than the old microcircuitry. When Regan was in office he had much military hardware EMP proofed. That level of protection doesn’t apply now because of the sensitivity of new micro circuits. There is a company that does much DOD work. It is EMP SHIELD.
They have a device that installs in a car to EMP PROOF it
Besides Faraday bags and cages, EMP SHIELD makes a device for the whole house. It must be installed by an electrician. Anything plugged in is protected without a faraday cage/bag. We have one. Not cheap, but neither is your TV, microwave, fridge, HVAC, etc. EMP SHIELD does a lot for DoD. I have no connection to them.

As for cars, you need one with minimal electronic circuitry. Like a 59 Edsel or an air-cooled VW or a 64 Falcon. Just make sure to have spare points/condensers/coils/alternators on the shelf under faraday protection.
I’m told a metal building with well-grounded lightning rods can go a long way towards protecting what’s inside.
To my mind, the threat of an EMP is not just what it does to your electronics. It’s what it does to everyone’s. There’s a meme that says as soon as Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, he started giving away his invention to his friends and neighbors. Why? Because things like a phone are worthless if there’s no one to communicate with. If your car still works, where will you go? You won’t be able to get gas anywhere. You might be able to get home, but I seriously doubt you’ll be able to drive there if everyone else’s cars are dead on the road.
I hate to be the doom and gloom guy, but that’s the way I see it. If an EMP goes off, we’re in a lot bigger trouble than what concerns us as individuals. We’d be on the verge of a societal breakdown, at least temporarily.
If we’re seriously considering the effects of an EMP attack, I think the idea of saving your phone or car is a moot point!
If we’re “attacked” anywhere upon this land, it will be more important to me if my rifle is still zeroed, cleaned and lubed! Nothing else will matter.
I don’t have a source, but I read something somewhere (am I being vague enough yet?) that a lot of cars will just shut off due to an EMP. But a good percentage of them will start right back up.
A tidbit from the past… After Black Tuesday market crash and during the Great Depression one of the only stocks to make people money was a company making Strike anywhere matches.
Bic Lighters anyone.
Ya know I used to be the prepper man and stuff and thought about that stuff 24-7-365 and I just got sick and falling apart and have a young grand baby and elder parent that needs cared for and just figured h311 with it ya know? I mean really what is anyone really gonna do? Huh? Scrape and live outdoors and eat and drink this and that till when? When it’s over? And what about your family they all coming to up the mountain? Lol Pleeeaase. That “ hide away in the woods up in those hills” is gonna be so crowded it’ll be worse than living in an apartment bldg. And what about the countless desperados that want what you got? What if theirs a group of them? Gonna kill ‘em all every day? Gonna have an armored tent? It could go on forever and ever
Not trying to bust anyone’s bubble but about all anyone can do is try to protect
what you have at home until you run out of ammo what you got at home. Can’t very well repopulate the world. Well I can no longer see what I’m texting so I’m buggin out. Just some food for thoughtt
TEOTWAWKT is a bit of a myth. Hurricanes, tornados, floods, winter storms, social unrest, job loss, injury or illness are real. Not being a burden and being able to help others is real.
