If ever an EMP event or attack: What can we do to prevent electronics from damage?

Let’s say you put your phone in a faraday cage and what good would it do if the towers do not work? You could still play solitary but getting ahold of someone else may be futile since their phone would be out if not the whole system.

Your radios may be helpful if there is anything else is working elsewhere but how minimal would that be? Information is information though! Good information is key!

Im not sure, about phones but my phone is Satellite capable and Push To Talk capable, in the Aftermath of of 9/11 and Katrina, and even with what’s going on with Hurricane Helene and Milton I’ve been able to reach out. Alot of people don’t realize PTT is completely different than Cell so even if Cell Service is down or overloaded, PTT is usually not.

With new tech becoming more and more capable and prevalent I’m hoping some one is thinking the obvious about security and hardening their cell towers. But the most important thing about my electronics is information storage. I have dozens upon dozens of books cross loaded on several devices. Even entertainment, books, movies, music. Plus some night vision capability. My Faraday bags are water proof as well and since I do have mission critical electronics it didn’t cost that much to add a few more just in case bags, they weren’t terribly expensive.

I don’t even think our electrical grid/s are protected so what good is any of it? So if everything else wasn’t fried you could call someone or run this and that? Oh yea generators, yea a thought but who’s got a thousand or whatever it is gonna take gallons of fuel stashed already?

This is so true. The hurricanes of the last two weeks should have everyone doing prep for events like these. I don’t know if it’s still in the national news cycle, but the destruction from Milton keeps getting worse in Florida. The rivers are now flooding and destroying hundreds or even thousands of homes. The Withlacoochee River is flooding whole communities out, and isn’t expected to receed for 4 weeks.

Natural disaster events are predictable, able to be planned for, and should be taken seriously.

Regarding EMP’s and vehicles, I had found the same thing as @Sinbad in my looking. As far as my own, older truck is concerned, it’s got a basic ECM that is housed in a fully enclosed heavy aluminum housing. I expect it would give some decent protection against an EMP. I haven’t worked on many newer cars, but the Pontiac I had for a long time was the same. I could see where the manufacturers would attempt to give the critical systems some protection, but I could also see where secondary systems would fail. It’s also possible that the cost management “engineers” run the design process, and shielding for the ECM is just too much money and not “justified”. I don’t know.

To me, if you’re going to protect any communication devices against EMP, it should be a set of handheld radios for your own team to communicate with one another. Beyond that, like others have said, what’s the point if no one else had communications equpment working? Further, your radios are only going to be as good as the batteries you have on hand, or the ability to charge them, and that could be very limited.

Unless the ECM is unplugged and connector inlets shielded, it would possibly be damaged by the wiring harness picking up EMP

True. None of the wiring appears to be shielded on any vehicle I’ve worked on.

Wow… Defeatist much???

No, hardly any news at all. It’s being erased and/or dropped in much of the msm.
P.S. Unless it can be blamed on Prez. Trump.

Used to watch the prepper shows. Then one day I realized I wasn’t ready if we had a really bad snowstorm or tornado, lightning strike and things like that that really do happen in my part of the country. And, if I took prepping for EMF, nuclear attack, etc., I am dead anyway without immune suppressants and all of the other meds I take. And, my wife says she doesn’t want to live in a bunker for a month and emerge to nothing. So, we will both go out on the patio in our swim gear and get one really dandy tan. I worry about my kids and their families. Though, we all know where we’re going when God calls us home! One project I am taking time with is to gather my “Front Door Book”. That way my family will have everything they need to carry on. Copies of documents, layout of water shut offs, gas shut offs etc., names and places to contact. At the same time putting in some extra food and water stores, toilet paper, etc. and having the fireplace and chimney looked at. Thinking I will check out one of the Generac whole home generators. I have a big list. Reasonably sure no one wants to hear it all.

  1. Heavy duty aluminum foil (not for my hat though). LOL.

As others shared, could be least of our problems. Bless us all.

As others have stated there are mixed reviews on whether a man made EMP will do more than temporarily shut down a modern vehicle. I saw some testing awhile back with I think a 2015ish sedan where the vehicle shut off but then was able to be started right back up. Not sure if anyone has done any testing on the latest vehicles, especially hybrids and full on EVs.

Solar based EMPs are on a longer wavelength and should not affect vehicles at all unless they are plugged into an outlet.

If you are concerned about EMPs www.empshield.com makes military grade EMP protection that is easy to install and not all that expensive for vehicles and homes. They also protect against the much more likely threat of lightning strikes. Though they don’t currently work on vehicles with lithium batteries and they only protect items in the home that are plugged in.

I have a little metal faraday box insulated on the inside with cardboard and sealed with metal tape inside my safe. It contains a multi band/weather radio, a couple of LED headlamps, a small solar panel, battery charger and some rechargeable batteries. I have a metal ammo storage cabinet that isn’t as well sealed but might provide some protection where I keep some handheld radios and a couple of LED lanterns.

I agree. Societal stoppages for recovery is my main target and goal. But I do have land I can go to. Not developed but wilderness.
