I had a contractor come in and remove a few tons of river rock and sandstone pavers, we discussed the whole job, shook hands on $5k for the job and signed a contract.
Took a few days, but the equipment showed up alongside a rolloff….
His crew did a good job, though only one of them spoke broken English at best.
I was leery about the rolloff being too small for the job, and his crew confirmed that he literally did that on EVERY SINGLE JOB! And when they called for a pickup sure enough it was too heavy to be lifted.
Even the rolloff driver confirmed that he was notorious for doing this and their company would no longer be working with his company.
His crew had to manually dig several tons of rocks and dirt back out of the container to get it picked up, leaving a massive pile of debris in my driveway and only about 3/4 of the job done.
His crew was pissed because he did that crap all the time, then blamed the crew for overloading it and refusing to pay them any extra to empty it back out.
The next day, they had a proper dump truck available and were able to finish the job.
In the meantime I took some measurements and pictures and did some calculations of yardage and tonnage…. The rolloff he ordered initially was only good for approximately 1/4 of the job, and with 20+ years of landscaping experience he should’ve know that beyond any doubt.
Then the little weasel demanded that I pay an extra thousand dollars for having to order a second rolloff as if I hadn’t been talking to both his crew and the rolloff company prior to paying him!
He even threatened a lien against my home until I emailed him a copy of the signed contract and the signed check for the agreed amount that he cashed along with a note that I’d be happy to take him to court for false advertising and employment of undocumented workers.
Never heard from him again.
P.S.
His crew really were good men, hard workers, being treated like slaves because they weren’t here legally and didn’t have the legal protections of American labor laws.
I gave each one of them an extra $50 on their way out because I know well enough from talking to them, he wasn’t paying them
for their hard work!
