Gun Safe for Car

My EDC is a P365. I need to get a gun safe for my car. What advice do you have? Are there specific characteristics to look for, or must-have brands? I know absolutely nothing about them. Thanks!

Console Vault makes an actual safe for a lot of vehicles. ConsoleVault.com

If you’re only looking for temporary storage because you needed to make a quick trip to the post office, parking your car across the street, any generic portable box with cable will do. You can get them from Basspro, Cabela’s, Harbor Freight or Walmart. M

Console Vault does not make one for many GMC

In South Carolina that would be illegal. You can only use a factory installed glove box or console box with a manual latch. It does not have to have a lock, just a manual latch.

@FunCycle
Hey there, friend :smiley:. As a fellow South Carolinian, I respectfully submit that I don’t think that’s entirely correct but please correct me if I am misinformed.

Section 16-23-20 (9)(a) is where the SC Code of Laws addresses this and it reads as follows:

SECTION 16-23-20. Unlawful carrying of handgun; exceptions.

It is unlawful for anyone to carry about the person any handgun, whether concealed or not, except as follows, unless otherwise specifically prohibited by law:

(9) a person in a vehicle if the handgun is:
(a) secured in a closed glove compartment, closed console, closed trunk, or in a closed container secured by an integral fastener and transported in the luggage compartment of the vehicle; however, this item is not violated if the glove compartment, console, or trunk is opened in the presence of a law enforcement officer for the sole purpose of retrieving a driver’s license, registration, or proof of insurance. If the person has been issued a concealed weapon permit pursuant to Article 4, Chapter 31, Title 23, then the person also may secure his weapon under a seat in a vehicle, or in any open or closed storage compartment within the vehicle’s passenger compartment; or
(b) carried openly or concealed on or about his person, and he has a valid concealed weapons permit pursuant to the provisions of Article 4, Chapter 31, Title 23;

“Generally, this means if you have an SUV, you can store the gun in the back as long as it is in a suitcase, closable bag, etc. You can also have a handgun in the “closed trunk” of the car as well.” (Carrying Handguns in Vehicles in South Carolina)

Prior to obtaining my CWP, I relied heavily on this section to legally transport my pistol as I did not want any problems if I were to be pulled over.

@Elza1 mentioned Console Vault. They make a really good product. They are not cheap however, IMO, you definitely get what you pay for with them. I want one for my F-250 but haven’t been able to convince the comptroller (wife) that is a necessity.

All I can tell you is that is the way it was if it has been changed, I am not aware of it. A manufactured container was not legal. This is the way it was when I got my CCW years ago. Also, before we could legally open carry, you could open carry to and from hunting and fishing as long as you had a hunting or fishing license. So technically you could have a break down rod and reel or rifle in the back seat you could open carry. I have had this argument with law enforcement that was not the intent.

Tuffy products makes some console safes if that is what you are looking for:

If you are looking for something that is more of a mobile option that can go under the seat and be locked down with a cable lock check out a basic mini gun vault safe or Vaultek also makes the Lifepod that could be a good option as well:
