Federal Law Enforcement Ammo

I have liked the mushrooming that this ammo has but, I can never find it and places that do have it do not have it in stock. I have heard that most places believe it is only for Law Enforcement Agencies but, I do not believe that to be true. It is already hard to find ammo but to find specific ammo gets even harder now.
I have been reloading but for self-defense ammo I want it to be purchased quality ammo, not range ammo.
What are your favorite rounds? What do you think about Federal law enforcement ammo? I am basically talking about self-defense rounds.

If you are talking about Hollow Point type of rounds many companies make it, I like Sig brand, but Federal, Hornady, and Winchester all make very effective rounds. LeHigh makes a full copper round that is quite effective. I have many HST rounds for my 38, basicly a wad cutter with a bite.

Federal +P Hollow points Law Enforcement is the one I have the big question about. I want to have it for self-defense.

Hey Todd30-I carry 9mm Federal HSTs in 147 grain +P (labeled by Federal as “Tactical”) in my Sig Sauer P320 compact. I was able to purchase them from Tactical Defense Solutions with no LE credential. They’re a bit more expensive than other sites but they have it and will sell it to you without credentials.

I am able to find the Sig Elite Performance rounds in 38+P at Natchez Shooting. Hornady Critical Defense in 38+P is also there. I checked on line and both are in stock.

My personal experience…

A couple of years ago I wanted to get into 9mm. The local Cabelas had Fed HST 124gr +P. That was the round I wanted to stick with. After a few months, they stopped carrying it. I went to other local shops (smaller dealers) and they all said that it didn’t exist. I checked the Federeal Ammo website and it listed it as law enforcement only. I switched brands.

Recently, with the ammo shelves bare, the local shop had it… one of the same shops that told me it didn’t exist. Weird…

I carry HST. I checked my ammo site and it is currently unavailable in 9mm.

This is what I was able to find. They are charging double what it usually is.

This is the site I’ve started to buy from after multiple recommendations here. The only hollowpoint they have that I’m familiar with is Winchester white box. It’s definitely not the best in my opinion. But it is a hollow point.

I think this is a really cool resource if you haven’t seen it. It’s ballistic tests on a large number of self defense ammo.

I don’t know about the Federal LE, but I have Federal HST 230gr. The round I recovered shows nice expansion and retention, so I kept them.

yes, this has been the problem I have been dealing with. One place told me you have to be Law Enforcement to order it.

Just as a comparison…

Ya… I live in Cook County, IL… We can’t mail order this stuff. When I was purchasing Fed HST (in 9 and 45, and sometimes in +P) a few years ago, it was $1.50/round at Cabelas… that price doesn’t include the 5 cents/round Cook County tax nor sales tax. At my local dealer a month ago, it was about 80 cents/round.

My local shop has it in 50 round boxes for around $40. They don’t get it often but I get a few boxes when they get it.

Excellent rounds but pricey. All companies raising there prices in stores and online due to this pandemic. Well here in the state of VA anyways.

Also hard to find right now, but I am partial to Barnes TAC-XPD. It is +P and from my experience feeds and groups very well. It is one of the highest expansion rounds with low penetration in Lucky Gunner’s 9mm tests: https://www.luckygunner.com/labs/self-defense-ammo-ballistic-tests/#9mm
It is also very well reviewed by Gunsamerica: https://www.gunsamerica.com/digest/ammo-test-barnes-barnes-tac-xpd-9mm-p/
This is my first magazine shot with it:

Edit: I forgot to say the reason I mention this is just in case you see in stock somewhere you might not of considered buying it.

When you get to the place where reloading is cheaper than buying it, it is going to change things.

I practice with it often. Good quality ammunition. I load my Sig P320 and Glock 19 with it.

Federal HST rounds (definitely 9mm, I suspect also other calibers) are the same in their LEO box or Personal Protection box. The different box is just for different marketing. If a store tells you they can’t sell the LEO version just find another store. I’ve always found mine online from SGAmmo or LuckyGunner. You can also check AmmoSeek, its a site that aggregates from all the online stores to find the best price/availability.
