The increase in cap gain tax is only for the wealthy who derived significant income from investments. Middle class earners remain at the 15% discounted level. In my view, there should be no difference between cap gains tax rate and ordinary income tax rate. The lower cap gains discount rate was intended to spur investments. It makes sense that the cap gains discount should be phased out or reeduced for more wealthy individuals so that they pay the same effective tax rate as middle class poeple. Another reason why weathly people pay little to no income tax.
That is not true. There are many ways to legally avoid CG. When Reagan reduced the CG rate, income tax revenue from CG increased. The wealthy will always find ways to avoid taxes, and they have more means (money to pay accountants and lawyers to find ways) and avenues to do so than those that are not âwealthyâ. When tax rates are high, those with the most to lose find ways of not paying; some ways are legal, some grey, and some plainly illegal. I worked for the IRS and for the state in taxation in audit for over 30 years.

By all means, in a system based on capitalism, letâs penalize people for wanting to increase their wealth. They can be mediocre and save money by paying less taxes for staying under the rich peopleâs threshold.

In response to Doorleyâs behavior, the Rochester City Council wrote a letter last week to New York Attorney General Letitia James requesting that she launch an investigation into the âconduct of Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley,â News10 NBC reported. The letter claimed that public officials are held to the âhighest standards of ethics, accountability, and respect for the law.â
âThe behavior exhibited by Ms. Doorley during the traffic stop, as captured in the body camera footage, appears to violate these standards,â the letter noted.
Hochul was also critical of Doorley, saying she considered the incident unacceptable and accusing Doorley of âclaiming she is above the law.â
âDistrict Attorneys are responsible for prosecuting criminal and traffic offenses, and must perform their duties with the highest ethical standards,â Hochul said in the statement. âEarlier today, I referred the Monroe County District Attorney to the Commission on Prosecutorial Conduct following the release of police body cam footage showing her claiming she is above the law, attempting to use her public office to evade responsibility, and acting unprofessionally towards a police officer simply trying to do his job.â
âIn doing so, she was acting in contravention of her responsibility as a District Attorney and undermined her ability to hold others accountable for violating the law,â Hochul said. âWe are deeply grateful to the men and women of law enforcement who put on a uniform each day to protect the safety of all New Yorkers.â
