Aside from the normal size probably being too small for all but micro compacts and most would need the XL size, what are your thoughts? Or a 945 Industries bag? The key is that it cannot look like a gun bag.
The problem I see with all low-profile, non-descript, non-gun looking bags is that people will automatically assume it is a gun bag, and “Kreepy Karen” will undoubtedly contact the Manager or local PD and swear to be damned you assaulted her with a gun. Been there, done that.
I currently have a very gun-looking bag from 5.11 I keep with me with an IFAK, flashlight, multi-tool, etc…and I have been accosted about it while strolling through Walmart with the fam on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Thing is, when I had the same kit in a non-gun looking bag, I was still accosted. It wasn’t every time, but enough to make note of.
I have found in my experience the larger the bag, the less I get confronted. Larger bags, like a single point sling bag which might be big enough for a laptop, are better suited for tooling around without people thinking you have a weapon on you. They will assume you are a college student or some professional type with a laptop. I carry my laptop around in a 5.11 Messenger bag and many times it does get carried around on the weekend. It has Velcro and Molle all over it, I have two 6x6 pouches attached to it and it LOOKS Tactical. I can carry that bag around anywhere in town and no one says a thing. They don’t even assume I am carrying My Wife’s PX4 and two spare mags in one of the 6x6 pouches.
Why would anyone even bother with a bag at all ? I mean with nice IWBs and other ways why would a bag be the thing? If I was to use a bag it would be a computer bag for sure because I’d think they would be less conspicuous for sure.
Actually I like them a lot and have a few from the small discontinued Maxpedition Pili to a few of their Octa Versipack waist packs. When I lived in FL they were a great option when hiking in really hot weather or for the beach with a bathing suit and light t-shirt. Works great in the Southwest when ultra light shorts are the attire for the day.
I take the appropriate zipper pull off and weave a more substantial one out of parachord (I do the same for SD knives as you can see below) for a fast and positive one motion grab/unzip and practice until it’s mindless. As fast as any other presentation if you work at it.
Have you ever had any issues with that holster, re-holstering?
No, I use a Kydex trigger guard cover that is attached via parachord to the bag and snaps off as I draw which is just as fast as drawing from AIWB. To re-holster I just snap the trigger guard cover back on and shove the gun back in the bag.
Great point. To use a bag like this, it’s important to have a proper holster in addition to the bag or at least a trigger guard. Some of the youtube video about bags like this, the person has a holster velcro’ed to the inside of the bag.
I tried the holster in the bag thing but it never worked for me. I like the minimalist trigger guard covers with a grommet that allows you to tie it to the inside of the bag with a short loop of parachord. They simply snap off as you draw your gun and do not slow down your draw at all.
