I have had my eye on a Colt SBR for awhile, but not sure the practicality of it. I own an AR with already. I’m not sure if I really need it. We live in a rural area, the closest big city is about 2 hours and the closest major metro area is over 5 hours away. We rarely go to the metro area and that would be the only time I would consider needing it. I know it would fit in a backpack, but most places don’t allow backpacks or weapons on property and I really don’t want to leave a backpack in my truck unattended. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. And I always have my version of the American Express card with me…I never leave home without it. Thanks!
Just me, but if I had spare cash I’d be stocking up right now on ammo (And mags) for firearms I already have, unless I already had a very large inventory.
In my opinion, having SBR is a great option for good self defense plan. All depend on the environment you live in, but the rural area seems to ask for variety of firearms.
Rifle for long shots, SBR for maneuvering between buildings, handguns for home.
That would be my plan… if I could legally own the SBR
At this point the only full size AR in the house is my wife’s.
I sold all of mine except for my 7.5” registered SBR in 5.56 and my 5” 9mm AR pistol with a brace and folding stock. That’s how much I love these little shorties.
I can hit anything I need to with either from across a room to a few hundred yards with the 5.56/and if the distance is greater I have guns that can reach out and touch someone far, far away….
SBR is definitely on my Gun Bucket List. Go for it!
The “illegality” lies with those jurisdictions that don’t recognize your 2nd amendment rights.
Not sure if Colt makes an SBR in any caliber other than 5.56. If you can, I would suggest shooting an AR pistol in the caliber you are considering to see if you even like it. The shorter barrel 5.56 I have shot (10-1/2" or shorter) exhibit quite the fireball display and are very noticeably louder than their 16"+ barrel counterparts. Most people don’t complain, but I personally notice more recoil with the shorter barrel rifle caliber(s).
On the other hand, the 300 blackout is designed to burn all the powder in a 9"+ long barrel - i.e. lack of fireball - still loud without suppressor. Of course the pistol caliber SBRs will have less recoil and no fireball to contend with. Food for thought …
