How do I price 5.56 to privately sell some of it?
I have a good amount of Federal XM193F 5.56, kept in AC and in original cases.
I rarely shoot my AR so would like to privately sell some ammo to buy a new gun. Checking prices online is confusing. It ranges from .47 to 1.05 per round for other brands.
Any suggestions on where to research a fair price to ask? Does it make a difference that it’s Federal ammo? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Hello Robin -
Federal is a brand rather than an indication of any unique classification or other similar distinction.
As for pricing, AmmoSeek is a site that is used by quite a few, myself included. Looks like they have it for ~$0.49.
Here’s a link and good luck offloading it!
For private sales GunBroker or Armslist (Requires a subscription) are the best way of selling ammo.
Hints:
Price per round will tell you ABSOLUTELY nothing. Huge difference in pricing if you’ll be selling in 20 round boxes or in 1,000 round cans. Find the quantity you are willing to sell and THEN compare pricing. You’ll need to be at least 20-50% cheaper than a commercial outfit because folks do NOT trust any private sellers they don’t know, and they shouldn’t!!! Anyone can try to push a bunch of their own or commercial reloaded ammo as “new commercial ammo” and some unscrupulous folks have gone as far as to package in original boxes. As a buyer, when your gun blows up there is zero recourse on a private sale so the price needs to reflect that.
I will not buy ammo from anyone but a well known commercial outfit or a trusted friend, and I buy in bulk so for 1,000 rounds of 5.56 I’m only looking to pay a few hundred dollars, hardly worth the effort. To tell you the truth I have actually given away or traded 5.56 ammo to friends to make room in my pile of “stuff” because it was not worth my time to sell it.
Thank you for responding!
Thank you. Yes, want to sell in 1,000 round cases. It’s legit Federal in sealed original boxes. I’ve never used or bought reloads. I’ve used GunBroker to sell guns, but ammo is so heavy. I do have some interested buyers but need to just come up with a price. Thank you for your expertise.
I would just put a sign up at a local bulletin board someplace usually at a food store or hardware store it’ll sell
Anytime! BTW UPS has flat rate ground shipping by volume of the box up to 75lbs IIRC. It’s the cheapest way to ship ammo, perfectly legal, and I’ve used it a bunch of times with ZERO issues. If you get an account they cut you a little break on the price too and you can pay and print labels at home and just drop off at any UPS store. They ask NO questions, just scan and give you a receipt. Ammo in original packaging you can get closer to dealer price but you’ll still have to give a little, maybe 10-20% to make it attractive, the cheaper you go the faster it moves.
Good luck!
Not trying to be a dick, but not just no but, HELL NO!!! You couldn’t pay me to advertise in public that I have ammo at my house…
I was saying what I would do. I wouldn’t leave my address. You are right that would not be too smart.. I mostly see guns for sale, not ammo.
@Robin29 myself I have tons of friends. I would just trade or sell too. Worst case I would talk to some guys at the range to sell too… My earlier post was to give you going prices at different sellers. With them if they give you a good price check what their rating is on shipping they backdoor extra cost to shipping … I never deal with anyone on that list below 6 …
IDK. Good question.
Is it a supply and demand scenario? You are competing with stores who sell new/factory inventory whereas customers might fear what exact conditions and age are they really buying. Is auctioning them off an option, highest bidder? Appreciate your question, cause I also have other calibers I really do not need and wish to sell, but I have never sold anything online.
Been thinking about selling em at a “gun show”; The simplicity of it, not having to mail/ship or use an FFL store. Any advice on me going thru a gun show?
Yes, I’m competing with stores, but the people I will sell to know that I’m honest and only selling factory ammo at a cheaper price than they can buy it.
I won’t need to auction. I did sell other ammo on gunbroker, but it wasn’t a lot so it wasn’t heavy. Selling locally is best. Gun show works.
