I have been searching for a good Universal Gun Oil for regular firearm cleaning and maintenance. The one I am currently using is nearly finished, so I started looking for a better replacement. I checked Amazon reviews, firearm forums, and different user opinions online. After reading so many comments, it looks like Universal Gun Oil keeps getting recommended because of its lubrication, rust protection, and smooth performance.
It seems to have strong features like protecting metal parts from corrosion, reducing friction, and helping with long-term maintenance. I also noticed it has plenty of positive reviews, which made me interested in trying it. But before buying, I wanted to ask here if anyone has already used Universal Gun Oil. How is it in real daily use? Is it actually good for cleaning, easy to apply, and durable over time? Does it perform well in different weather conditions too?
Would really appreciate honest feedback before I decide. Thanks in advance.
I’ve used #9 for decades without issue, it’s lightweight enough to not attract a lot of dust, heavy enough to not burn off too quickly, otherwise does everything it needs to provided you maintain your firearms properly.
Lol yeah, Mobil 1 gets mentioned a lot
I am just trying to figure out whether there is any real-world difference between proper gun oils and alternatives like that in long-term use, especially when it comes to rust protection and maintenance.
the joke is that everyone will have their opinion. Tons of great options. Depends on if oiling is a single step or part of a multiuse product. Is it cleaned every time it is shot or rarely…like mine. Good luck with an answer!
Hey Micheal, I’ve used Breakfree and old non-synthetic G96 (smells good) and they seem to work pretty good. Then I stumbled across the article in the link below. So, I bought Eezox and Hornady One Shot. Just starting to use them, so I’ll see.
Mobil One works fine; the only thing it doesn’t have is rust and corrosion inhibitors. Motor oil is an effective lubricant for moving parts. Whereas gun oils are formulated to protect metal surfaces exposed to moisture, sweat, and varying temperatures.
You will have to try an decide… because everything is a personal preference. There is no “magic formula”.
The simple rule is:
regular maintenance between shooting sessions - any gun oil or Mobil-1. You just have to adjust viscosity to your local temperatures
long term storage - thick oil is better, because it stays wherever you apply it
rust prevention - just keep guns in home temperature and humidity level and you are good
Do not spend hours to find out which brand is the best… anything that creates barrier between two moving parts and between metal and oxygen is good. Just be sure it does the job - thin oil for shooting, thick oil for long time storage.
Spilled a quart of hoppes in my gun room, and my wife liked the smell. She also likes Ballistol and told me to “buy more ammo” from 2016 through 2019. 43 years together and counting, still using hoppes and Ballistol for cleaning, got about 4-5 different oils and like Lubriplate grease as well.
Appreciate the feedback that is exactly the kind of long term experience I was looking for. Good to hear it holds up well without attracting too much dust or burning off too fast.
hhaha fair point everyone definitely seems to have their own favorite. I guess a lot of it really does come down to how often the firearm is used, cleaned, and what kind of maintenance routine someone follows.
I was mainly referring to long term use with regular cleaning and maintenance. But yeah, storage conditions would definitely be a different scenario and probably need more focus on corrosion protection over time.
I have actually been using #9 Lubricating Oil too. I really like it, it has a clean pleasant smell compared to a lot of other oils and it applies smoothly. It also works well for regular lubrication and basic protection during maintenance.
