My “hot sauce” of choice does more of a straight gel pattern but luckily we only tested it on a non windy day.
You just reminded me why I was spooked a couple days ago. I saw some Bison on a conservation land, Only thing separating him from me was 10 feet and a few strands of electric wire fencing. I could hear his grunts and smell him. I never felt so small that windy day.

Recently encountered a mama black bear on my morning walk with my little dog and there with her pups they were behind a line of tall shrubbery/bushes the mama bear with her cubs and the cubs ran to the wood line and my little dog (on the leash) charged the mama bear and she hesitated as she lunged then she stopped mid-lunge and she turned around to see and ran to her cubs. I had a stun gun in my pocket that’s always been a great bear deterrent here but I fumbled and just could NOT get my hand into my pocket fast enough. Close call and feeling very fortunate that it didn’t go down the way I feared .

I feel as if I had a sidearm holstered owb I could have popped off a defensive or better yet a warning shot but getting the noise deterrent from my pants pocket just wasn’t happening.
I did. And it’s one I’d learned a year or two back to pay better attention to my dog because she knew, she smelled them in advance but I disregarded her cues and I’m focusing on her behavior much better now. I hope my experience can help one person or at least encourage you to do the same, always listen to our horse or dog .
My 10mm is carry most often, I keep the mag with 180gr JHP plus a spare mags so 31rds of jhp and a second mag just for 4 legged critters being 125gr solid copper deep penetrating TUI ammo…
JHP in a bear is probably not going to penetrate enough to really hit vitals…
There was some testi g at my range for carry ammo where the instructor brought ballistics gel and invited people to bring various ammo they carry or are interested in to be tested…
The 9mm special ammo I bought was TUI, another person brought underwood extreme penetrator, between the 2, both solid copper, they went the same distance but the TUI ammo had a bigger cavity and when it was pulled from the gel, was standing upright about an inch into the next block (115gr). It was getting rather dark when it came time to test in the gel and when the TUI hit the block, there was a flash like a camera flash. From what I could tell. It flashed from the TUI round tumbling in the gel…
The TUI ammo also has a special place for me as, Paul Harrell, may he rest in peace, always kept a spare mag of 9mm TUI for his Beretta 92….
I got to know Paul Harrell a fair bit, enough to where he knew me by name… Good test results in the gel plus Paul carried a spare mag of it, good enough for me to keep an extra mag or revolver strips of it for back woods carry….
Unofficially, ive seen multiple videos of the 9mm making it through soft body armor.
