I just now came across this thread, and may I say well done, sir! We all had to start somewhere, and for the fortunate of us, we had someone in our lives that helped us learn what we needed when we needed it. We always have to remember that not everyone has those types of people in their lives, and unfortunately, will jump headfirst into the firearms pool without knowing how to swim to keep their family safe. While I agree that one should, at least, do due diligence before using/purchasing a firearm (especially when they don’t have a knowledgeable person to help them), some people don’t. Those are the people that need help the most! That need us to be paying attention as @DS-1 was, and to have patience to help them. I don’t doubt that if he would have gotten bit as hard as half I’ve seen online, that it would have taken him a good while to get back in the saddle, if he did at all. We don’t need to run those people off, we need to welcome them and help them the best way we can! By sharing our knowledge and experience. We always say “the more responsibly armed citizens, the better!” …when we meet someone that needs help, we need to prove that we mean it… just like DS-1 did. I know several people on here that have stepped up when they’ve seen a need, and I commend those people for doing the right thing.

Mike68 I was young and still not real bright! And I was at m friends cave and I just got a new 10, millamiter , and she knew how to read any way I let her check it out and Yeper 
she pushed a button !! Here a there . And she handed me back , FUNDAMENTALLY STUPIDEST THING EVER a Red neck beginning to show me how did she do that . She was a gun smith and she told me , come back when I could respect it I understand what she MENT I just had to much pride to look so stupid just make that a requirement , to buy A fire arm pass a common sense course or MABE two or three thanks for the lesson Bobby Jean

LOCKES are for honest people! You can take a pair of channel locks! And lock them on Most any pad lock and hit the side of the lock an it’s open we would lock the trailers up at work with big master locks and not wanting to wait for the keys crimp and tap and done and not even scratch the lock IF the criminals are getting this information they , need to understand video is going to be the problem an stupid equits prison !!! And most cameras are not the ones called dummies , just like any one that takes OPS THAT IS SHOT FOR OUTHER PEOPLES STUFF , Bobby Jean ps get a job! Respect your self or not

Sadly, it’s not too hard to imagine. There’s a shop near me where the owner just stands behind the counter scowling at everyone until they are ready to buy something. It’s almost as if they look down on anyone who isn’t an expert in their eyes. With all the first time gun owners buying guns to protect themselves, there’s a lot of people buying guns without any real knowledge of what they need or how to choose the right one. As much as I value our 2A rights, I’m actually glad my state requires some training before issuing a concealed carry permit. At least Beth the soccer mom and Tom the Walmart stocker get a little guidance before heading out the door with their new gun in their pocket.

We were all beginners at one time or another. Who of us wasn’t awkward and unsure when we first started to learn to drive, probably with equal measures of over confidence and over assessed ability.
This man had realized things were changing, and not for the better, he was getting older, the cops were a long way away from where he lived, and he just wanted to be able to protect his wife and family when they had growing vulnerabilities.
If I choose wisely and help turn a few neighbors into competent defenders, I am also safer, have more local backup, and am less alone, not to mention one more enlightened voice to add to, hopefully, help defend the right of an effective self defense,

I sincerely believe dealers should at least “offer” an hour of instruction to new/first time shooters. Many such folks are simply ignorant of the proper way to do things and just a bit of education could make a big difference. Not talking Stupid here, stupid you can’t fix.

One LGS requires new buyers to watch a video before selling them a gun.
The counter point is that I am quite sure the new gun buyer was shown how the semi-automatic handgun worked, somehow in the process he had forgotten the obvious fact that the slide was going to come back and that if he put body parts in the way of it, something unpleasant was sure to happen.
I think he was able to forget that detail because he was dealing with three different handguns at one time and was new to all of them, so he had overwhelmed and overloaded himself by taking all three to the range on the same day when he was not yet familiar with any of them and all three were of a different type.
Could be it was a simple case of someone trying to do too much at one time.

My local offers a $9 one-hour course for familiarization with your new firearm as well as a $9 one-hour course for cleaning your new firearm. If the firearm is purchased from the dealer both classes are free. They sell a lot of firearms, but only around one out of 20 new gun owners bother to take either class. You can lead a horse…

Sounds like a good program. As I said, ignorance you can fix with education. Stupid ya can’t do anything with. A friend teaches CCDW classes. Says the absolute WORST students are young guys that think they “know”. Tells me he’d rather teach 30 newbies rather than ONE “Tacticool Tony”

Absolutely! I have pissed off a lot of fathers, husbands and boyfriends because I would not let them sit in on their significant other’s first-time shooter class or private instruction. I think the women appreciated this, however, as it avoided a lot of “man-splaining.”
