AR500 Gear?

I was getting mocked pretty good the other day about having an AR500 plate carrier and plates. Nobody could really say why they’re bad, so I was curious if anybody here had any information. Constructive, please. I’m fine with it not being good gear but I’d like to know why and what I should look at instead. Best - J

The top limitations would seem to be weight and spall.

A good testing and explanation of the AR500.

These. However, I wouldn’t spit on it…it works for what you need. Please make sure you have a quality spall pad. One day your neck/chin/face at a minimum might thank you.

Thanks for the replies and video. The plates do come with that layer to help reduce spalling. I feel better about my setup at least.

I have AR500 plates and feel comfortable with them the only thing I was concerned with was spall and I did get extra spall pads as for weight I think it is about what I wore in the sandbox so no big deal

Thanks for the video @BRUCE26

Been trying to convince the Boss to let me buy a set of body armor and have been looking at the AR500 setup.

This makes me think it’s a good choice.

Abrasion Resistant 500 steel is what my steel targets are made from.

COMMON USES FOR AR500

  • Buckets
  • Bulldozers
  • Chutes
  • Dump liners
  • Excavators
  • Hoppers
  • Truck beds
  • Truck plows

As a body armor, the coating is probably where the differences lie.
