Weekly Thought Bubble - Self-Defense Misconceptions: Warning Shots

In the military we were trained to fire warning shots if viable, but, is firing a warning shot as a civilian ever legally or tactically appropriate? Think self defense in a situation that already requires the drawing of your firearm and you are presented potentially with a deadly force situation.

I draw to shoot.
God forbid I’m put in a situation like that because that’s my simple approach.

Warning shots are never authorized!

Seems dangerous to me.
Fire it up in the air? It’s got to come down somewhere.
Fire it into the ground? Hope when it ricochets it doesn’t hit you or another innocent by stander.
Fire it flat? Who knows where that’s going to end

Not to mention, my magazine carries 7 rounds, being one down if a “Warning Shot” fails to deter puts me at a tactical disadvantage, Reloading take precious time that I may not have in some situations.

Marines aren’t the only branch brother. I served in a specialized unit that was permitted to perform warning shots with the m240b prior to engaging. Although, as team lead, I never authorized it. I always skipped it due to dangerous actions.

As an European born I can tell the same

We do use warning shots
and these are most time appreciated by everyone, including Justice System.

It took me over year after coming to USA to change the habit.
Because I’m still confused about warning shots
I carry less deadly weapons as well to be compliant with US Law and my European mind

In most States unfriendly to Gunners (that usually tinge Blue).
Discharging your Firearm is a CHARGABLE OFFENSE. (A/D: Accidental Discharge also)
IF you are in danger of being beaten or Killed, Fear for your Life/Safety,
Protecting your Family -----YOU SHOOT/STOP THE THREAT.
IF you feel the need to fire a WARNING SHOT? I must ask why?
‘Crim’s’ don’t usually scare easily, so firing a shot not @ them will prolly embolden them.
(At the very least piss them off) If you can EVADE—Skedaddle!
One of the (4) RULES is 'YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR EVERY ROUND DISCHARGED OUT OF YOUR WEAPON {Don’t shoot unless you know exactly what your shot is going to strike. Be sure that your bullet will not injure anyone or anything beyond your target.–rule 4} (amirite?)

The only warning a bad guy has in my home is the sign on the front door warning him that nothing in the house is worth his life, then it’s pewpewpewpew
or an Earth shattering KA-BOOM!!! if I have my 12-gauge.

True story

When I was stationed at Cannon AFB in beautiful Clovis, NM, my buddy Dewayne shot and killed a bad guy in his home. Double tap, center mass, with a Taurus PT99 in 9mm. Dropped the bad guy like a sack of potatoes.

Clovis Police Department saw it as a righteous shoot, but the ME determined the bad guy died with the first round.

Dewayne got charged with a negligent discharge of a firearm within the city limits for the second shot.

Been shakin’ my head on this one for 40 years.

When I was in the service the only “warning” shot fired was that of a ship putting a 5" round across the bows of another. Otherwise the only other “warning” shots were the ones the enemy survived.
In civilian practice, all a warning shot will do is add a negligent discharge to the list of charges against you. If you have to draw a weapon, the person you’re aiming to shoot has already been warned enough.

Now look here son, I’ve drawn this line in the sand and if you cross it, you’re in trouble. Darn it you crossed it? Now you’re in real trouble!

There’s no such thing as a warning shot.

Yeah! Cops don’t do that unless their first shot misses. Liable for its terminal trajectory consequences.

While you are wasting that round, the bad guy can be wasting you with his first round.

Why give that away?

Oh I see you , pew , yeah let that be a warning to you .
I missed on purpose,
so you can come back tomorrow and see if you can succeed
.

A warning shot is the use of deadly force.
And if it was not warranted, you’re responsible for it.
And you could be the one facing charges for attempted murder.
