The question of whether execution - public or otherwise - acts as a deterrent may be open, but it certainly deters the individual.
Personally, I have no problem with a return to public hangings - there can be no question that, in the specific case, ‘justice is done’ - and you have the option to watch or not. Those who commit acts vile enough to warrant the death penalty deserve a ‘merciful, comfortable, death less than that they afforded their victims, and ‘as to cruel and unusual’, hanging is to quick to be ‘cruel’, and was common, rather than unusual.

Executions used to be public so that people, especially children, could witness and think twice about committing a heinous crime. People would tell their kids that this is what happens to people that kill people for no valid reason. That’s what a deterrent is for.

Who here on this forum really gives two s@#ts about whether or not a murders feelings and comfortable death are relevant. Were they sure to allow their victims a quick and painless demise? I have no issues with public executions.

I remember when our state did away with Capital Punishment (the Death Penalty), and the argument from the Left that made that happen was, “Killing isn’t a disincentive to commit murder, rape or kidnapping!” My reply was and is, “It sure guarantees that ONE perpetrator will never create another victim!”
