U.S. Navy shoots down U.S. Navy Jet

DEI must DIE.

That is my favorite plane. They could have just left it here. I’d have made room.

Not sure how we can blame this on DEI. They had supposedly just had some incoming attacks they were responding to as this jet was taking off. The computer systems and their operators are having to make split second decisions on which objects are friends and which are foes. I can only imagine how hard it must be to make those calls at the speed they need to be made these days.

Crap happens. Especially in war zones, especially when those war zones are undeclared and unauthorized by congress.

Fortunately the crew survived!

And yet…others have done it just fine. I can’t remember hearing of another one like this. It is why they do training, and why these folks should actually be trained before shooting at taxpayer owned planes with patriots in them.

How many times do aircraft carriers have incoming fire while conducting flight operations these days? For decades our carriers have been moslty, if not almost entirely, operating outside of the range of those willing and technologically able to shoot back at them.

Times and technology are changing rapidly. With drones and hypersonic missiles the age of the aircraft carrier - and perhaps even the fighters they are carrying - may be coming to an end. Carriers are now very vulnerable targets with immense propaganda value for anyone succeeding in taking one out. I suspect those charged with protecting them are under an immense amount of pressure trying to keep any attacks from getting through.

I don’t either. I think DEI and this mishap are a result of peoples brains being fried.

With modern technology I think it is becoming impossible for humans to keep up with the speed at which decisions need to be made. Easy to see how brains could get fried. We can turn those decisions over to the computers. But they are only as good as their human programmers at the moment. At least until the AI gets good enough to completely remove humans from the loop. Then we can que the Terminator and Matrix scenes:(

I can see some argument for the DEI stuff distracting the military from its primary mission. But our military has a host of significantly larger problems that are contributing to its current lack of readiness and ability. Lack of capable and qualified personnel, misplaced and misappropriated funds, corruption, unmaintained bases and equipment, poorly designed and defectively built ships and planes, leadership continually preparing for the last war instead of the next one. The list goes on and on.

The very hallmarks of DEI.

From the Battlestar Galactica reboot, now 20 years ago (which we’re rewatching over the holidays). this was part of their tech suite before they found earth to make us. IF you haven’t ever seen it, you should. A lot of useful info about what’s going on today in there!

More likely the hallmark of more and more good candidates being reluctant to join a military that keeps getting involved in conflicts that have more to do with benefitting corporate interests than protecting the nation.

I would fight to defend our country against an outside threat if needed but I don’t want my son sent off to protect some corporation’s oil or rare earth mining interests.

The way DEI is being shoved down people’s throats is a problem. But it also serves as a great distraction from all the other significantly larger problems our military and nation are facing.

Thanks George.

One important thing for IFF to work is that the planes’ transponder must be on.

I think we need to give the sailors some slack on this one. They’ve been shooting down drones and anti ship missiles for a couple months now. New aircraft carrier in the AO. I’m sure shyte is going to land on a few people but I think a good ass chewing should do it. All aviators are alive.

And a review of procedures to do as much as they can to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

But agree it is the people that are important. Our government can always print some more Monopoly money to buy a new plane. Not to mention whatever very expensive missile they probably used to shoot it down.

Look Folk’s I see BOTH sides of the equation here and this is
UNFORTUNATE (Thank God it’s not Flag draped Coffin Tragic).
Are we weakened because of the last bunch of DEI misfit administrations?
Yepper! Can we come back from this? Yepper!

But there is ALWAYS a Friendly Fire/Blue on Blue chance when we
engage the Enemy. Listen, some of you people already pointed out
how Naval Gunner’s continue to pour it on after the threat is down in other threads here.
ADRENALIN WILL DO THAT!
I know diddley 'bout Naval warfare, but I do know something about combat.
Man, it’s hard in the heat of Battle to distinguish friend from foe sometimes.
And what about ‘Collateral Damage’?
If there are two phrases I dislike (misnomer’s?) it’s ‘Friendly Fire’
and ‘Collateral damage’. There’s nothing Friendly or Collateral about it when it’s
an Innocent or a Patriot. And it feels damn awful to witness it but indescribable when you do it!
In my case the Woman and a couple of kids DECIDED to pick up a weapon, Charge us wearing a vest—I had NO CHOICE. (Well, I did but letting them kill me ain’t really a choice I’ll ever give someone)
You come @ me trying to kill me you’re gonna die. Simple.
I’ll feel bad about after I’m back home and ALIVE!.
Whoever pulled the trigger a mishap in Comm’s or a bad read of the Scope
or even a nervous Gunner somebody dropped the ball
As Shamrock just said we can always print moe money or build another plane.

I won’t comment because I don’t know how I could possibly know enough about the situation to do so.

Critics have attributed these absurd mishaps to the U.S. Navy’s adoption of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs.

I’m not going to blame this on DEI, but I will say putting people in jobs because of anything except qualifications and ability is absurd. Especially in the military.

Having worked in the CIC on a Perry class FFG in the 1980’s and having served in that part of the world when Iraq and Iran were shooting at each other and sometimes freighters, if the combat team is not on top of their game things can go sideways real quick. Glad to hear that there was no loss of life.

My opinion is that I do not know enough to have meaningful thoughts on the subject

Some other responders in this thread may know a lot more than myself, may I ask where that information is coming from? I see comments implying we know who made the mistake and why the person who made that mistake was put into that position.

Whose mistake was it and how did they get that job/enlistment/whatever?
