Trump 15% National Sales Tax

Are we all ready for the national sales tax Trump is enacting. Confused? I’m talking about the tariffs. The net effect of the tariffs is just a national sales tax because we are paying it, not foreign countries.

Latest reports are the 15% “sales tax” of Canadian and Mexican goods will create price increases on gasoline (~$0.50-1.00 increase); tomatoes, limes, peppers, avocados and other fresh farm produce; new car sales and car parts; among many other goods we import from Canada and Mexico.

Tariffs are mostly a negotiating technique/tool. Trump isn’t going to 100% tariff anyone who we want to do business with.

But if someone does have the guts to call his bluff it will be us who pay for those price increases. Eventually some of those higher costs might go into the pockets of U.S. citizens instead of our bankrupt governments bottomless pockets. But it will take quite some time for production to move back here to the States. And in many cases it may just be foreign companies opening up plants here instead of locally owned businesses.

I would expect the tariffs to be noticeably inflationary. Are those added costs worth the potential gains? We will have to wait and see. Though as seen in the last election; the American public has little patience, or in many cases the financial means, for dealing with inflation. So public pressure could cause the tariffs to be dropped well before they accomplish their intended goals.

Everyone seems to stop at “Tariffs will increase prices” but let’s go a little farther down the road. When prices increase sales will decrease leaving the original supplier with product they can’t sell. That’s when they get interested in negotiating. So yea, our price will increase momentarily but in time the original supplier eventually comes to the table and the tariffs are lifted.

“American workers can outwork and outcompete anyone as long as the competition is fair,” … “But for too long, it hasn’t been fair. For years, the Chinese government has poured state money into Chinese companies … it’s not competition, it’s cheating.”

This was uttered by your hero, Joe Biden, in May of 2024 as he increased the tariffs on China originally imposed during the first Trump administration.

Please provide a link to your post that demonstrated the same negative view of tariffs.

You are leaving out that Pres Trump wants to do away with the IRS. I’ll take +30% tax reduction with. 15% tariff increase every freaking day. For me, the tax forms have gotten so complicated that I use a CPA to get them done.

Yes, the purpose of a tarriff is to increase prices to the point where domestic industry can compete. Emphasis on “increase prices”. And it will take years or decades for the full effects to be felt. For China, tarriffs make perfect sense because the chinese government heavily subisdies its industries allowing them to sell at below market rates. And we’ve seen some companies move production to other countries in response to the tarriffs. The same is true for Boeing’s competition with Airbus (who receives more govt subsidies than Boeing). But Trump’s plan to tarriff everyone makes no sense.

The U.S. may be the only country in the world that the world couldn’t do without. Never going to happen.

He isn’t planning to tariff everyone. He is planning to threaten to tariff if the playing field isn’t fair. We’ll be fine.

If you’re all for foreign countries dumping their low quality products in America undermining production in America. Do you also want to make chi-na’s yuan the reserve currency for the world too? Do you not remember pet food from Chi-na that was killing our pets? Chi-na is flooding America with fentanyl killing 100s of thousands Americans every year. Where is your loyalty?

No link to your post(s) of disdain for tariffs kept and/or imposed by Biden, got it.

Please post a link to the Trump plan which imposes tariffs on “everyone”.

While you’re at it, I’m sure that we would enjoy reading your prior posts exhibiting outrage for the tremendous government spending during the Biden administration that caused inflation to skyrocket thus increasing the costs to the American consumers.

By the way, still waiting for your list of reasons as to why you, or any other citizen, voted for Harris during the primaries. You know, for the sake of democracy and all.

Did you not read my post, “For China, tarriffs make perfect sense”

Do you lack comprehension skills? Can you read at the 9th grade level? All I was talking about was CHINA!

Edit: you said: Trumps tariffs on everyone makes no sense. I then gave you reasons why it does.

PS: what was my very first sentence to you? It was:
you’re all for foreign countries dumping their low quality products in America undermining production in America

Tariffs affect the seller/importers ability to attract customers.
In the United States, tariffs are collected by Customs and Border Protection agents at 328 ports of entry across the country.
Paid at port of entry which affect price increase within the country. But the buyer/distributers within the US can determine an alternate source that is not subject to tariff, thus keeping prices down.

If you want to talk about uninformed opinions, Trump doesn’t even understand how tarriffs work. He thinks foreign countries pay the tarriffs, which couldn’t be more false. That was the purpose of my title to this thread. Do people understand that he lied and tarriffs result in higher costs to people in the U.S.? It’s nothing more than a sales tax paid by us imposed on foreign goods. Trump is either an idiot or a lair, or both. You pick.

At a rally in Arizona in mid-August, he claimed that Vice President Kamala Harris, his Democratic opponent, is lying: “She is a liar. She makes up crap … I am going to put tariffs on other countries coming into our country, and that has nothing to do with taxes to us. That is a tax on another country.” In September, he repeated the claim during an interview with Fox News: “It’s not a tax on the middle class. It’s a tax on another country.” And he said again during a rally in Wisconsin Saturday that “it’s not going to be a cost to you, it’s going to be a cost to another country.”

According to available data, only a minority of Americans read at a ninth-grade level or higher, with estimates suggesting that around 50% of US adults cannot read at an eighth-grade level and a significant portion reading below a fifth-grade level; meaning a relatively small percentage would reach a ninth-grade reading level or above.

Key points to consider:

  • Average reading level:

Most sources state that the average American reads at a 7th to 8th grade level.

  • Low literacy rates:

A significant portion of the US population struggles with literacy, with many adults reading below a 5th-grade level.

  • Data source limitations:

Precise figures on the percentage reading at a 9th-grade level or higher can be difficult to find due to varying testing methods and data interpretations.

Do you not know what negotiations are? Did you not see how effective they can be used to level the playing field? Pres Trump told Columbia to take back their illegals, they said, Pres Trump said I’ll put a 25% tax on your imports. The NEXT PHUCKING day Columbia sent their own planes up and took their OWN people back on their own money! Do you have TDS or something? A president, any president should be for and support America first, above all other nations. An American president’s job isn’t to spend $50M on condoms for an African country! That $59M should be spend on vets, the poor, Medicare and other services for the American people!

Phuck any other country. We come first. Is that so hard to understand?
