I’m kind of on the same page as @William191 . If it were me, I’d quietly throw it in the trunk and drive home following traffic laws. You aren’t buying it, and there’s no law that I’m aware of that prohibits leaving one state with a firearm and driving to another, as long as the firearm is compliant with the laws of the state. I wouldn’t attempt to take a Texas ar to California, but I don’t see a problem bringing a California ar to Texas, for example. That said, totally different beast if it’s a SBR.

No worries. Keep in mind I’m not a lawyer, and my opinion carries no legal backing. If you want it, I’d just make sure it doesn’t get turned in to the law, since she doesn’t like guns. Edit: We don’t know anything about the referenced rifle, and I don’t mean any insult, I just want to make sure you don’t create a problem for yourself if you don’t know… make sure it is not an SBR/NFA firearm before you leave with it. If it is, do not leave with it.

So sorry for your loss.

Have you considered talking to a FFL in Mississippi and/or Illinois regarding the legality of acquiring the firearm?

So sorry for your loss. Lots of great input here, and I hope you won’t have any issues in possessing your father’s rifle and taking ownership.

In Mississippi she’ll be fine, but Illinois is where the uncertainty lies.

Thank you so much. I’ve received some great information within this group, including a portion of the ATF website someone provided. Yes, I’m going to also consult a FFL in both states if further clarification is required.

Thank you. I’m praying that as well.

I don’t think it is a SBR/NFA. I haven’t seen it since I was a child. He always had a long barrel rifle for hunting rabbits and squirrels. I’m also concern about her putting it in the wrong hands. Me keeping it safe honors my dad.

Who on earth has receipts for guns bought decades ago?

Thank you so much for this information. I’ll definitely go to a FFL and speak with them.
