The only reason to not use that security device is in the case of living alone with serious medical issues where you would be barricading EMS from a medical emergency.
I have a life threatening condition called Addison’s. I made sure that all of the First Responder agencies, have a one time code specific to their agency. I’m home alone from 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. So I have my home alarm set to call my wife, PD, FD and EMS if it’s a medical event (have a medical alarm button and a panic alarm, above and beyond the alarm set off by breaking into my home). For those who have an alarm. I would highly recommend 2 additional things for your alarm.
- A code to turn the alarm off, that silences the alarm but still sets the police to your location. For in case someone has you under duress and wants to force you to turn the alarm off
And - a code phrase that tells the monitoring alarm company that you are under duress and they can turn the alarm off and send the police to your location while they act like everything is ok.
I’ve had both happen to me while I’ve been an area supervisor.
Here’s my problem. I wear earplugs to sleep. Wifey snores! (I do too, but it doesn’t keep me awake
)
That said, I don’t have any early warning systems in place like a dog or electronic sensors, although I am almost ready to pull the trigger on that option.
But what happens if the electricity goes out for extended periods? I guess many of your systems have battery backups, but I would like an analog (mechanical) type of alarm as a deterrent backup for at least my doors. Does anyone know of these types of alarms?
Yes there is a door stop alarm. That’s a backup. Battery powered.
I use something similar.
For me that would be running a generator. I’ve got a very quiet and fuel efficient “suitcase inverter” gen, ~2k watts, runs internet router/wifi, outdoor lighting, fridge, freezer, charges electronics and the battery in the alarm base, etc (battery supposed to last 1 day without power).
Also mechanical locks and barriers that make noise to defeat + dogs.

Thanks for the link, but I really wanted a mechanical alarm. (Not reliant on DC or AC.)
Something along these lines, but with a wind up bell alarm
That looks like a good electricity free option. Wonder how loud it is?
Could see a wind up bell being louder but you would have to remember to reset it after every time you use the door.
You’ve heard these when you walk into certain stores, they are everywhere. It’s a single, pleasant chime as soon as you open their door. You can hear it from the back of the store when someone walks in.
It is easily adjusted to chime or not chime by a sliding piece of plastic that covers one of the magnets.
What I want is this type of enclosure, but an alarm clock type bell that continues until it has wound down, to A.) Deter/give pause to the person that opened the door from coming in and B.) Wakes me out of sleep so I can grab my firearm.
May have to just try to build a prototype myself.
