Texas deploys special border force to drive back expected migrant surge

By Doina Chiacu

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Texas deployed a special border force on Monday to target “hot spots” where migrants try to enter the United States illegally after sweeping COVID-19 restrictions at the Mexican border end this week, Governor Greg Abbott said.

Abbott, a Republican who has been fiercely critical of Democratic President Joe Biden’s decision to end the Title 42 policy on Thursday, said members of the Texas Tactical Border Force, a new specially trained National Guard unit, were being loaded onto Black Hawk helicopters for deployment.

“They will be deployed to hot spots along the border to intercept to repel and to turn back migrants who are trying to enter Texas illegally,” Abbott said at a news conference.

A similar tactic was used in El Paso successfully last December, he said. In the last couple of days, he said, the National Guard identified and suppressed a surge in crossings at Brownsville, the same city where a driver plowed into a group of migrants on Sunday.

The elite National Guard team will focus on any such surges that occur, identifying crossing points and shutting them down, he said. They will have access to aircraft, boats, night vision equipment and riot gear, he said.

Title 42 allows border agents to rapidly expel migrants to Mexico. It was first implemented in March 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic to stem the spread of the coronavirus in crowded detention settings.

Its repeal is expected to lead to a rise in border arrivals as a result of pent-up demand and the perception among migrants - many of whom have traveled thousands of miles from places including Mexico, Central America and Venezuela - that they will be allowed in.

The Biden administration is sending 1,500 additional troops to help secure the U.S.-Mexico border this week. The government also will finalize by Thursday a new rule denying asylum to many migrants caught crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally.

Abbott said he would continue busing migrants from small Texas border towns to big cities like Chicago and New York.

He said he was working with state lawmakers to make it a felony to illegally enter Texas from Mexico or to be involved in so-called stash houses for migrants who have crossed the border illegally. Another measure would impose a 10-year minimum jail sentence for anyone convicted of smuggling people into Texas.

to intercept to repel and to turn back migrants

Sounds like they will be closing the doors to a bar, rather than repelling boarders! It’s not going to be pretty. Can’t close the door now, Brandon promised! It creates an international crisis with Mexico!
Brandon is not strong enough to stand his own ground!
It’s no wonder he’s hiding in a hole just like Saddah Hussein. Cowards can usually be found in a hole, wasn’t Gaddafi found in a hole as well? Hitler was found in a bunker, same difference! Bunker, basement or hole!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m ok with legal immigration based on merit not rap sheet! Then again that’s the democratic base!

The article didn’t get into many details about what this Texas Guard unit would and would not be able to do on the border. It could be interesting, because as a unit commanded and funded by the state, they are not subject to the same Posse Comitatus restrictions that their active duty counterparts will have on the border.

I hate to say this because the state of Texas is completely correct in defending its border. However, this has the workings of a disaster written all over it. Imagine the field day the media and their ilk will have if there is an armed conflict of any kind on the border. You can’t send the military to perform an mission and leave them unarmed (Lebanon anyone?).

I pray that this does not turn into a total disaster for the men and women being sent there to perform a mission, that our national leaders are not willing to undertake, or are complicit in fostering.

This is a disaster waiting to happen. People have to qualify for these payments. Many, many people will think that they qualify. What happens when only a handful of politicians, and their families and rich doners are the only ones to “qualify”? Nobody in their right mind can believe that thousands of slave descendants will receive any thing.

This a Constitutional issue coming the the forefront …

Under Article I, Section 8, Clause 4: “[The Congress shall have Power . . . ] To establish an uniform Rule of Naturalization …” Some have argued that states – like Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California – have the duty to decide whether to allow individuals to cross the border and Congress is only empowered to establish uniform rule of naturalization. Federal agencies like the Border Patrol are beyond Congress’ enumerated Constitutional powers.

Reparations check will be dangled in the face of Black community for a long time, especially before elections.
Just how long? Until the community that has no slaves rejects the idea it is OK to rip off every other community, that has no slavers for this historical sin. Until then, this greed and victimhood will be manipulated by the vicious.

California is 22.5 Billion in deficit as of 01-10-23

What was recommended?

The task force recommended a range of policy proposals, including the creation of an agency to handle compensation claims and possible “down payment” to those eligible as well as how to calculate the amount California owes its Black residents.

Among the recommendations were possible estimates of reparations owed by the state, including:

  • An estimated $13,619 for each year of residency, based on a 71-year life expectancy, for harm caused by health care disparities.
  • An estimated $115, 260 or $2,352 for each year of residency in the state within the 49-year period between 1971 and 2020 to compensate for mass incarceration and overpolicing of Black communities.
  • An estimated $148,099 – or $3,366 for each year between 1933 and 1977 spent as a California resident – to account for discriminatory housing policies.

How much would reparations cost?

Some economists have estimated that the state could owe roughly $800 billion in reparations.

That estimate, however, doesn’t include the recommended $1 million per older Black resident for disparities in health care responsible for shortening their average life span or the amount to compensate residents whose property was unfairly taken by the government or devalued.

But the number does account for the $246 billion to compensate eligible residents subjected to mass incarceration and overpolicing from 1970 to 2020 and the $565 billion for redlining – a discriminatory practice – in housing loans.
