Super-Concealed Carry: S&W 442 or Springfield 911?

Hey,
I’m selling a rifle and a shotgun, and I’m thinking of picking up a small backup … something that could be worn in an ankle holster. My XDs-9 prints too much (from the grip height), but the Springfield 911 shaves 0.5" off…

Couldn’t find specs on the S&W 442’s height, though…

Other ideas for super-ultra-micro carry options (that aren’t completely ridiculous)?

Smith and Wesson Bodyguard .380 or the Sig P365 9mm.

thanks; however:

i think the 365 is bigger than my xds, and i don’t really care for shields/bodyguard 380s…

The Springfield XDs has a 3.3 inch barrel and the Sig P365 has a 3.1 inch barrel.

It’s grip height where I print in an ankle holster… :frowning: I appreciate the suggestions tho

Brother I just looked at some reviews on youtube on both these guns and they are both good choices for backup guns. One is 380 and the other 38 spl +P. I believe more capacity is the way to go but man they are both good guns. if I had to make this choice I would go with the 38 because I carried one on an ankle holster back in the days.

Ruger LCR, or Sig 938/238 would be in the same ballpark. For the size, and purpose you describe, the LCR in .357 mag would be my choice.

I would get either a Glock 42 or a Glock 43 for a BUG. Or a S&W Airweight.

I’m looking for an ankle carry … 43 might be okay, I already have a 43x but is also too tall on the grip. I guess the 43 would help with that.

My local guy has the S&W 442 “We The People” edition … https://www.smith-wesson.com/firearms/model-442-we-people-limited-edition … I believe it’s an airweight.

And I’m pretty sure that it can be worn on my ankle without printing. I just have to find patience till Wednesday

Yes, the G43 would help with the grip length issue and the G42 is slightly smaller than the G43 as well. If you can get the S&W I might try that as well. A snub nosed revolver will be less finicky with ammo than a micro semi auto, but then you will have to train with reloads on a different platform if you decide to carry a reload.

I have limited revolver experience, but enough to feel comfortable with one filling the shoes of a backup (which to me is 2nd or 3rd option, or the most minimal on-body carry (ankle)).

I like the revolver platform for many ways. I’m not sure why nobody has really addressed (to my knowledge) the semi-auto pistol being brought out of battery when pressed into a person in close combat (I’d think having a barrel decently longer than the slide would fix?)… so that’s a nice benefit to revolvers.

Well, I placed a bid expecting to be outbid, and this wound up happening…
Road trip across the state!

Hope that works for you. My two ankle guns are a 380 or a small revolver. The 442 would have been my choice I think. I don’t care for the revolver for EDC alone but as a back up it is a perfect fit. And with the diminutive 2 inch barrel it disappears under all but the most tapered slacks… With a pistol in semi automatic I almost need at least a boot cut to hide the grip. That Springfield looks like a good choice.

My Springfield XDs-9 Mod.2 has a spec height of 4.4" w/ the flush mag, and this Springfield 911 has a spec height of 3.9" w/ the flush mag … I think a 0.5" difference will be night and day.

Uhhhhhh… guys, I think I might still get the revolver though, too… @ $449 i think I might have to just pick an extra couple guns to offload. Or work crazy extra. IDK.

It is a bit addicting. It seems as if there is always an excuse to get another gun. For me I was taken under the wing of an old gun smith that drilled proper cleaning and lubing into me. Gave me a crash course on the most common things to look for with a malfunction. One piece of advice he gave me was I should have at least one J frame sized revolver for concealed carry. I take mine to the range almost every time I go and put a few rounds down range to keep in practice. You don’t have to believe a revolver will never malfunction because they just might. But there are far fewer things that can go wrong so when you pull the trigger you can expect a bang. One reason I like it for backup is you know one is in the pipe and ready to go. You never have to wonder if it has been racked and ready. Not a problem for many of us but the thought sometimes is there for just an instant. Good luck with your new gun.

Congrats on the purchase. A little late, but I went with a Kahr CM9 for my mini option. I rented a S&W airweight and G43 before making the decision (I already owned a K9), and have no regrets. I changed my mind on the ankle holster option after noticing how often my pant cuffs come up in my daily activities (including sitting). I may revisit that option in the future, though.
