They seem pretty impractical from a self defense perspective but probably a lot of fun to shoot if you can afford all the ammo.
Since they require a manual action to load and don’t have a trigger they probably don’t fit any of the definitions out there of a machine gun.

That is correct, anyone can own one. But replace the manual mechanism with a motor with a switch/trigger of some sort and you head to jail. Funny how the laws are such a mess…

Several years ago I had received an email from a gun contest group.
They were having a contest for a Barrett M82A1.
I’d never heard of it before, so i googled it.
While i was, and am indeed, still impressed…
I just couldn’t figure out why I’d want a sniper rifle, which I jokingly described as “a rifle that could knock the hair off a gnat’s a88, at 2 miles, behind a brick wall.”
Needless to say… now I’m wishing I could have won it…
Not for actual need, but… like the gatling gun…

The VCDL is raffling one, though it is a Zastava in .50BMG, drawing is November 16. There are four other firearms, as well.

yeah. Need with something like this is not the right approach to the problem. A gatling gun may be just the right thing for someone’s collection. Not mine. All I see is the time I would have to spend cleaning one!
Single barreled guns take quite enough time to clean thank you very much.

YES!!! I NEED a Gatling Gun. I NEED to mount it at the top of the stairs because I NEED to protect down into the foyer.
Now all I need to do is buy the two-story house so I can protect down into the foyer.
I need this Gatling gun so I can have yet another reason to spend money on ammo.

“Need” is not the question when approaching the problem of “Should I buy a silly gatling gun?”
The “justification problem.” How do I justify adding this to my collection? “Need,” doesnt’ make sense, if “need” is a synonym for “necessary.”
Do I “need” half a dozen different .357 revolvers? Are they necessary? Probably not. But I enjoy them and that is probably enough.
Is an unwieldy gatling gun “necessary” to any one’s home or self defense plans. Almost certainly not. But if having one makes a person happy, and they enjoy really expensive plinking then having one is A-okay in my book.
