A road rager stops in the road, walks up to you with a gun in hand. How fast can you get to your gun and what would you do?
If I had quick access, I would have shot him walking up to me.

The driver of the truck has 100 percent justification in shooting him.
Sure I get pissed when people cut me off, I used to give back in kind. But, now that I am ALWAYS armed, I have given the jerks there moment of triumph in the daily traffic circus in the world, cutting me off, flipping me off does not bother me, because I can see the much bigger picture - there really is no threat to me and more importantly to those I am responsible for since I am the driver and have the control of the vehicle.
This situation above crossed the line for me. I do not know what transpired before the Mercedes driver blocked the truck and exited his vehicle with a firearm at the ready. That was the defining moment for me that my life was about to end. I would have taken my firearm out and keep it below the window line, I would not have fired through my windshield - as rounds can be deflected elsewhere, unless the aggressor here started firing upon exiting his car. In that case I would have used my truck and my firearm as countermeasures against the Mercedes driver.
The point for me was when the Mercedes driver raised his firearm up at that one point ever so slightly. I would have stopped his threat at that point. I am a former Spec Operator and Police Officer, my wife fully understands me as i have drilled into her what can and will happen in most scenarios with me. The number one thing I drilled in her was to listen to what I say and just do it - even though she has no idea in what I see and hear. If we are at a restaurant I view the door - if I tell her to stand up and walk out she would. She also knows that she will not say a word and that I will speak to the aggressor, in other words in this situation my wife would not have said anything to this gun toting Mercedes driver.
One thing for sure - the guy will die standing where he was.
Fun fact:
What is the difference between a Mercedes driver and a porcupine?
The pricks are on the outside of a porcupine.
And THATS y u never pull if not gonna fire
I would have turned myself into the aggressor if I had the time and saw him with the gun. I would have jump out of the car and while using the door as concealment, told him to drop the weapon as loud ( so any bystanders around could be witnesses) and as soon as I could with my gun pointed at him with my finger off the trigger. If I saw any flinch in him to point the gun at me I would fire.
I would have run his A$$ over instead of thinking about shooting him!
Very good course of action. Most people fail to realize their car/truck can also be used to defend themselves.
And if he was serious he would have just shot through the door. If you are serious, you wouldn’t be looking for bystanders for witnessing while he was closing the gap. If I were serious, I would just transfer my firearm to my left hand an shoot out the window. If that doesn’t work do what @Jamey1 said.
I had an incident with bikers. I floored the car in reverse for a couple of hundred feet then shoved it in drive and aimed stragiht at them standing in the middle of the road. They jumped out of the way.
As soon as I saw that guy open his door I would have been in reverse, otherwise, just like the driver, pistol at the ready.
I had one guy do this crap, he was behind me, laying on his horn. I saw him open the door and my .45 was on my lap waiting. Thank God he got back in his truck when the light turned green.
The moment I figured out I was involved with a road rager I would have called 911 and let them know what was going on and ask if I could meet up with the nearest officer. I would try my best to keep the rager from being able to get me to stop my vehicle. If the rager did block my progress and stepped out of the car I would have tried to drive away in the other direction or around on the sidewalk. If I had no safe path to escape and noticed the gun in his hand as he approached then (as others have suggested) I would have run him over. I would not have let him get beside my passenger window with the gun in his hand so he could take a clear shot at me.
If someone draws a gun on me or my family I am going to assume they intend to use it. I am not going to give them the chance to shoot while I passively sit there waiting to see if they are serious or just bluffing.
The next day I had 2 cameras in my car, front and back. Exhibit A and B
In this scenario I would have my firearm up, at the ready aimed directly at him. Then the command. “STOP! Get back in your car or you WILL BE SHOT!”
At that point the decision is on him. Regardless of outcome dialing 911.
It doesn’t matter how fast I can get to my gun, it matters how fast I can press the gas pedal. And I can press the pedal faster than I can draw. That’s what I would do, is drive.
This, IMO, is a perfect example of exactly where driving away is the better choice, tons and tons of room to drive away while calling 911.
Why in the hell would I want to sit there as a motionless target when I could be a moving and rapidly shrinking target? He wouldn’t make it past his back bumper before I was burning rubber
To those mentioning “If I have my family with me”…don’t make them sitting ducks, MOVE!
It’s possible that driving through the person threatening you with a gun is the proper course of action…depending.
I didn’t think about what I would do if he didn’t drop his weapon or run back to his car. Thanks for that. I am serious about yelling to get witnesses in case I have to go to court. I guess it all depends if he tried to point his gun at me because I would have mine pointed at him. He wouldn’t be able to shoot me through the door because I would shoot him first because I would have my gun pointed at him. Again the door is just concealment. I don’t think there is any right or wrong way to handle it, just what one feels most comfortable with. I don’t feel comfortable trying to run someone over unless my life depended on it. I would feel more comfortable with my gun pointed at him and trying to save lives by getting him to drop his weapon or go back to his car.
Reminder:
Dash Camera(s)
I would definitely drive away if I had the choice.
That guy had time and tons of room in which to drive away. He IMO seemed to rather sit there on the X and call the guy’s bluff. A dangerous game
Agree. He not only gambled with his own life but he waited until his passenger was also in the line of fire of a clearly unhinged person with a gun in his hands.
This might be a case where carrying a gun might have put this guy and his passenger at more risk. If he didn’t have his own firearm maybe he would have just driven away instead of asking his passenger if he should shoot the rager and then waiting to let the rager decide if he should have or not.
The name of the game is self defense not gun defense. A firearm can be a very useful and necessary tool in some self defense situations. But it isn’t always the best tool available. Especially in this case.
He more than likely did have room to drive away but at the same time he has to take his eye off the threat in order to do so. I can see where he possibly had tons of room but I don’t know that I would want to take my eyes off him to drive the other way. He was pretty close when he got out of his car and closer by time the decision to go the other way could be acted on. To easy for the BG to take a shot without the other guy having a chance. He already has a gun out and I wouldn’t want to give him more chances by diverting my attention to doing other things.
