POLL: Are You Finding Ammo? If so, where?

Smart @Reddic I’ve advised students to do exactly that. Start buying the caliber that they think they will buy. Stick only to a handful of calibers that way you can use the same cal. for most of your firearms. The only disadvantage to this is if you get all 9’s as your firearms, if you run out of 9 and can’t find any you’re shut down across all firearms.

Also SAVE your brass. Even if you don’t reload, someday you will, and/or someday you’ll find a friend that does. Throw it in a box in the garage and forget about it.

I have firearms and reloading dies for 9mm, 357/38 and 223/556. This makes things pretty easy. 357, there are some rifles (Henry Lever Action) that use 357 btw, so that is a multi-platform there. There are some SBR’s or giant handguns as I call them, that use .223, once again multi-platform.

GunBroker.com; be careful prices and fees can trick you. This is an auction site that can cause you to bid too high. Know the most you are willing to pay. Do a search for the type and quantity you want to buy and what the other site costs offer before you bid…

That’s right, the dealers are raping us when it comes to ammo.
Screw um.

Getting what I can where I can. Can get it on certain days at Academy Sports & Outdoors and Palmetto State Armory first thing in the morning when they open up. Have to get what they get in on any given day. My range where I go to shoot gets it in every so often in whatever brands and type (target or carry) that they can get from their supplier. So far I have been fortunate to get both round nose and hollow point to continue to carry like I want. Have just had to slow down on my range time in between ammo restocks.

Don’t be so fast to assume dealers are raping us. Many of the larger dealers (Cabela’s, Academy, etc.) have contracts in place with the larger ammo manufacturers and they also have other products that draw consumers in. They can survive without ammo for a long time.

If you are a gun store, ammo is really your bread and butter. They will be buying whatever they can get and won’t typically have the contracts in place to protect their pricing. While some probably are gouging many will be simply paying more for what they get.

It would be interesting if we could find out how many times a box of ammo is sold. Meaning is someone going and buying what they can at say a Cabela’s, then selling it to someone else for a profit who then in turn sells it to say an online reseller? How many people does it pass through (each with markup) that unded normal circumstances would not be involved?

I can’t order online in this area. The two places I usually go to are Cabelas and a local shop/range. I stop by every couple weeks to see whats there. Cabelas has basically taken their empty pistol ammo shelves and switched their holsters and bolt action rifle cartridges to them. The local shop/range would allow 9, 40, and 45 range ammo only for use on the range (limited amount per customer per caliber). All defensive versions were limited to new firearm purchases, and they were limiting boxes for that, too.

It’s been like this for at least 4 months, and I wouldn’t be suprised if it stayed this way throughout most, if not all, of 2021. I would be happy to be wrong.

I was at a Bass Pro Shop in Council Bluffs Iowa the other day (Wed, 12/23) and they had TONS of 9mm at $14/box. It was FMJ target ammo but it was pretty much back at the old price. They limit you to five boxes.

Santa gave me 2 boxes of 45ACP. Weird because I don’t have a gun that shoots 45ACP… maybe he’s telling me something

Hmmmmm… You could be right. I never thought about the resellers, I guess.

I only do because I work for a distributor in a different industry. I have seen all kinds of crazy stuff happen throughout the years.

Stay safe and Happy New Year.

I just bought reloading equipment, but I can’t find primers or powder. Last week Cabela’s was selling 9mm projectiles and bought a few for $0.09. American Reloading has some projectiles and right now they are 10% off.
