New Shooter Monday: Why did you start your self-defense journey?

omitted

A few of the more important differences between Combat Shooting and Static Range Shooting.
Static Range Shooting will in NO WAY prepare you for a real fight for your life or even just an attack of any kind.

Well this is taking much longer than I thought it would.

There is a Lot to it and a Lot to explain:

Static Range Shooting - You go to a range, get a Stall that is maybe 2ft wide.
You are not allowed to Draw or shoot “At Speed”.
Make mag changes etc.
“Problem is” - In a “Real Fight” - You are not going to have more than say 3seconds
to get good hits on your threat.

Range Shooting vs Combat Shooting
Range Shooting:
You take all the time you want to put all your shots into one hole.
ie Accuracy is “Everything”.

Combat Shooting:
One of the major concepts is Speed vs Accuracy - “At Distance”.
ie “Accurate Enough” - “At speed”.

Combat shooting:
It is a Balance of Speed vs Accuracy.
How fast can you shoot and be accurate “Enough” at each and every distance.

Consider your target to have say an 8in circle at High Center Chest.
(Check out an IDPA Target scoring Zones)
Your Objective is to put all your shots into that circle - “As fast as you can shoot”.
It is generally considered if you put 2 shots into this circle that "Most’ threats will be stopped.
With a major caliber gun - Say 9mm and up.
It is a blend of Accuracy vs Speed. You have to find/know “Your balance” at
each and every distance.

You can shoot faster at 10ft, than 15ft, than 20ft , 30ft etc
You need to find out /“Know” how fast you can shoot at every distance
and still get all or most all shots inside the 8in circle.

Then - Standing, kneeling, R Hand only, L Hand only, etc.
Then while moving. In the Dark, using a Light, etc.
THAT is what takes so much practice, time, ammo and skill.
For - Real Life - Defensive/Combat Shooting.

Keep in mind the FBI Rule of 3’s - Most Real gun fights happen like this:

  • 3 Shots, 3 Seconds, Inside of 3 Yards

Also - XCQB - Extreme Close Quarter Battle - Combat Tactics at distances of say 3ft to say 30ft.
Note - At 3 ft distance you do Not want to Shoot “At Full Extension” ie get your gun taken away from you.
You need to learn how to shoot from “Compressed Positions” - of which there are several.

Higher/faster shooting speeds and distance require Good, Solid - Fundamentals.

  • Grip - The “Modern Professional Grip” - Both thumbs forward and along the frame.
  • Sight Alignment - Front and Rear sight properly aligned.
  • Sight Picture - Sights Aligned AND Sights Aligned on Target
  • Trigger pull and Follow Thru - Relates to firmness of Grip. You Must hold gun Rock-Steady
  • all the way thru the trigger-pull and the Break.
  • So the Front Sight does NOT Move - even a Fraction.

“Combat Tactics” - After mastering the Fundamentals you can move on to the
TTP’s - Tactics, Techniques and Procedures - of Combat Shooting.

  • Use of Cover vs Concealment
  • Shooting while moving
  • One hand shooting, while moving
  • More
  • Teams - Husband/Wife at home, more.
