I heard a great lecture once about how arrogant we can be, and the speaker mentioned how everyone thinks that if they were living in the South in the 1800s, or in Germany in the 1930s, they would be the one who freed their slaves or resisted the Nazis. But we’re products of our surroundings; we inherit the enlightenment of our times. Very, very few people get it the other way around, where they enlighten the times they live in.

firmly believed in “Manifest Destiny” or something very similar…
in that they had the “RIGHT” to take things from others if others were weaker…
