My dad often walked the ditches picking up cans for recycling. We had bags and bags of cans in the garage waiting for the price of aluminum to go up. He had a home made can smasher that was a metal pipe with some kind of flat end on it (probably the thing you’d use to mount it on a wall?). Saturdays (when he wasn’t working), we’d line ‘em up and smash them flat and bag them up getting sticky from the last bits of whatever liquid was in them.
I wouldn’t say we were poor. Dad had four kids to feed and a wife he wanted to keep home. It was a good life but you brought back memories with your funny post!

I know plenty of kids around here who’s first ‘job’ was scavenging cans for recycling, and their families weren’t what you’d call poor. It was a good way for a kid to learn at little discipline and self reliance, since the money they got out of it was directly related to effort they put into it.
