Have I ever collected bottles for cash. You betcha I have. Collected ice cream wrappers and other types of “proofs of purchase” for ads in the back of comic books as well.

They still have that in oregon and a few other states I have seen some kids do it there. shame they don’t have it in most other states though.

Speaking of returning bottles for the deposit, I once livened up a family event up in MI [where they still have deposits] by claiming that it was our moral duty to throw cans and bottles out of the car and into the ditch. All their heads just about exploded! “Deposits prevent littering”, “don’t you want clean streets?”, blah, blah blah…
I refuted all their impassioned arguments with social justice! [I love the irony, too.] I explained that in our county there are any number of poor folk who supplement their meager finances by walking the roadsides picking up cans and taking them to the recycler. “I do my best to support the underprivileged members of our community,” I said. “I want to support and encourage the hardcore unemployed and under-employed and unemployable to be more independent. How can you be so heartless?”
