Legal to cc a dummy gun in Illinois?

Short question. Is it legal to cc a dummy gun in IL. Yes, i know it might sound silly but read on before nuking me.

I moved from IL a little over a year and a half ago due to job change (same company of 25 years), to WI. Never had my ccw in IL, didn’t trust the state much. Now I have my WI license, but I spend half my time in IL (I work based out of IL). I’d like to get used to wearing/concealing by carrying a dummy gun, while in IL, so it’s not awkward when carrying in WI.

Getting an IL ccw isn’t likely as IL is very tough on out of state permits.

So, i know it’s not a gun. Yes, it might cause problems if i were ever arrested for something unrelated, but is it illegal?

Is it a dumb idea?

You need to be asking this to a IL. lawyer or a USCCA lawyer to be sure the answer you get is 100% correct. and welcome no such thing as a dumb question. You don’t know what you don’t know.

If you was to wield it or act like it was a real one in the act of a crime I would think they could get something to stick to you but if you just got pulled over and for some reason they found it on you or in yours car IDK what they could charge you with.

Not sure about the legality, but, IMHO, been carrying for couple of decades.
Carrying a “dummy gun” to practice for the real thing, is a good way to get dead! Sorry to be so straight forward, but we like our members to stick around!

If you’re going to carry a concealed weapon with a license, in 2024, it should be locked and loaded and firmly and familiar on your hip.
You want to get used to carrying, carry the real deal in your backyard or while doing chores! I sure wouldn’t want to have to reach for the real thing and pull out the fake/dummy gun!

Hope that makes sense!

My suggestion is don’t.

Very dumb idea. You don’t even have to consult a lawyer, if you aren’t allowed concealed carry for a live weapon, you shouldn’t carry a trainer either. Cops don’t have much tolerance for people being smartass with legal distinctions, even a traffic stop may end badly for you. Do the permitting process and obey the laws.

Would be great to be able to get an IL out of state permit to go along with my WI permit. It just isn’t possible with the way the law is written. But ty for the advice. I will just follow the previous advice of carrying everywhere at all times while home in WI.

Mommy can we eat that gallon of chocolate ice cream with sprinkles and a carmel drizzle before daddy comes home from the range? :joy::joy::crazy_face::joy::joy:

I’m sorry but you made it sound like a challenge. :innocent:

Not a dumb question! You may choose a dumb time to ask it, however. Timing and context is everything in these matters.

PS: Welcome aboard, John1666!

There are no dumb questions, but dumb answers are always a possibility. Not here, of course. Everybody here is brilliant , knowledgeable, and helpful. Other places is what I meant; other people might give you dumb answers. :man_facepalming:

PPS: I would agree with those recommending NOT carrying a dummy/training gun when in public. One way or another it could lead to more bad than good.

Those would be very smart questions to ask before setting up as a super villain in their respective jurisdictions.

Excuse me, I’m high jacking a thread again. Don’t want to be accused of that again.

Now back to the topic please.

IMO if it is an inert piece of plastic it is not a firearm.

In poor lighting it’s good enough to get you shot. Just put 1 1/2 lbs of lead in your IWB holster.
