I was just reading the latest Concealed Carry Magazine about laser sights… I did not see anywhere about a training aid. for muscle memory. I have laser’s on most of my carry guns, but I advise people that the laser is best as a training aid without dry firing. What I am talking about is laying your unloaded hand gun (IDID SAY UNLOADED) on the arm of your chair while watching TV. Now grab the hand gun while picking a target on the wall. I DID SAY UNLOADED! Then you see where the laser hits the target. At the time of my first laser I was probably within 2 feet. As I continued to practice this I got to the point that it was around one inch or less. This is a muscle memory exercise that you can do with your UNLOADED HANDGUN at any time and just about anywhere in your home. To me the exercise is something that should have been talked about somewhere in at least one of the articles. To me I shoot by muscle memory and would only use the laser for low light conditions.

A laser might be a game changer if you are knocked to the ground or find yourself in one of many circumstances where you cannot use your iron sight. Or, find yourself in the dark.

In my case laser change nothing.
I found it even distracting while focusing on all important parts of shooting process.

Does laser helps? Yes it helps, as people were posting. But it always compromise time and time is crucial in self defense.

I found red dot much better than laser in every situation. Doesn’t matter if I’m standing, kneeling,
lying on the side or back - red dot gives me a clear and fast sight picture. Laser jumps everywhere.
Low light conditions - red dot still wins. In low light or no light I always use flashlight. Never point a firearm at something without clear identification.

I cannot imagine situation when I cannot use red dot or sight. Perhaps extremely close distance fight… but I doubt there is a time to turn the laser on. Within 3 -5 feet no sight system is needed.

A red dot sight works from the ground (most positions) and works wonderfully in the dark. Just sayin’

personally I have and need lasers on my handguns. mainly because I am a functional quadriplegic and I am unable to raise either arm above sternum height. so I relied on grip lasers to shoot and in a self defense situation it makes for a good target isolator. I’ve been doing it this way for 20 years. it has taken a lot of practice but, I can put 3 shots within a quarter at 5 yards, get any further than that and the groups get bigger.

laser grips come on as soon as you establish a grip. at least my revolvers do.

Target isolator is a great term for it. They work great in a very low or no light situation. I’ve only had one chance to practice at night and a green laser was a game changer for me.
