Congrats
Sweet! That Ruger 1911 looks good! And you got bonus guns! My least expensive 1911 is a Kimber TLW II, and I am loving it once I got the Swartz out of it…
I’d like to see a compact pistol in 5.7. I know it doesn’t exist, yet. Great round!
I want one of those six shooters that fire forty shots on one reload and always hit the bad guy in his gun hand just like the ones in the old western movies ![]()
I have owned or do own all mentioned but Cabot. Bill Wilson’s work is fantastic as is Nighthawk. Nighthawk was founded by some of Wilson’s best smiths, and they share a similar philosophy and design. Les does great work too, although he prefers less bells and whistles. Ed Brown weapons are very well made, but he offers substantially less models than the previous three.
One not mentioned ( at least I didn’t see it) is Springfield’s Pro FBI model. Mine ran just shy of $3300, putting it in the price range of Brown and Baer. Out of the box, they are incredibly tight, and need to be thoroughly broken in to ensure they aren’t too tight to be manipulated as a proper self-defense piece. I have found the accuracy to be unparalleled by any of the other manufacturers. This doesn’t mean that others might find this not to be so, as we are all different.
I think my favorite aspect of the FBI model is how “old school” it is. It features Novak tritium sights, The latest “group think” regales any sight design that doesn’t feature a shelf on the rear sight to assist with alternative methods of slide manipulation. Many premium manufacturers are also “into” different colors of fiber-optic front sights. Some use a large gold bead. I spent half my life wearing a badge, and I don’t own one pistol that doesn’t sport tritium sights.
If you haven’t checked out the FBI model, give it a look. Happy retirement!
I have been thinking about this hard. I want to reinvent an old original. The Thompson Machine gun. AR 45 with a 12 inch barrel. I want to get a good flash suppressor on it or a can. Not the Banshee, with a five inch barrel, I already have a 1911 .45. Then i could carry my .45 1911 and have my AR-45 pistol for a truck gun. And reloading .45 for a duel purpose.
Congratulations on retirement! Many different opinions for your question so here’s mine. I’m a 1911 fan myself. I’ve shot(not owned) Nighthawk, Wilson a couple times. I ran across an STI 2011 .45 ACP. 4.25 inch bull barrel. Loved it! Had the SVI Infinity metal frame in place of stock polymer job. Because of staggered rounds in magazine, it’s not much wider than a regular 1911. Just sold it back to my buddy for 1000 rounds of 5.56 and some cash. Hated to let it go!
Would love to see which pistol you decide on.
