Seems like I heard one of the lame stream media say this is the first hurricane to ever hit Cali?

Since Al Gore invented Global Warming, for sure

My understanding is this is the first storm that is projected to still have tropical storm strength winds when it crosses into CA since 1939. Most storms either go out to sea or significantly weaken before making landfall in CA.

Current projections are the storm is speeding up which should reduce rainfall totals a little bit. But much of SoCal is made up of very erodible soils with sparse vegetation to hold things in place so it often only takes a relatively short heavy rain storm to cause serious flooding out here. 24 plus hours of heavy rain should make a pretty good mess.

This could have the same effect as heavy rains in springtime

Hope everyone stays safe indoors.

I think Death Valley had a whole bunch of damage last year from what they were calling a once in a ā€œ1000 yearā€ flood. But that was only from 1 to 2 inches of rain in a 24 hour period. This storm could bring even more rain.

No actually they are hurricanes. Only in the Northwest Pacific are they called typhoons. A hurricane hit Hawaii on November 23, 1982 called Iwa.

While I am hoping CA doesn’t become a major disaster area, from where I sit so far it has done nothing but bring some relaxing cooler air here in the Phoenix metro area.
I’m loving it! Nice break from our normal summer heat.

California has always mismanaged their resources and infrastructure, even back when I lived there many years ago.

it gets real interesting in the south west and big rain storms
my wife and I were there during the Salt River flood [1980]
water runs off ,does not soak in
was working in Sun City ,took 8.5 hrs to get to east Mesa

Hopefully we don’t lose more homes in Draper.

Hello all!
Just outside of Las Vegas the weather is full overcast with a light drizzle.
According to Ventusky, winds are due to pick up to ~30mph around 2100hrs, substantially less than 60mph winds that blow through occasionally.
Went through contacts and ensured ~3 days worth of water and non-perishables in case the power grid goes down for a few days.
As it stands, enjoying some moisture in the desert!
Take care and remain aware.

I know Vegas has gotten some epic floods in the past though they have built up a pretty good flood control system over the years and the winds should be fairly mild by the time this storm gets to you.

We have been fortunate here in the Coachella Valley so far. With the exception of a couple storms on Friday evening most of the rain stayed to the East until very early this morning and it has been mostly light rain since then.

So we aren’t starting out with already overflowing washes ahead of the big winds and rains which should finally start moving this way in the next couple hours.
