Cover stops the bullet, and unlike the movies, concealment like a wall or a table may NOT stop the bullet!
A .22LR has enough power to pass straight through both outer and inner panels of a car door, rendering it useless as “cover”
I absolutely will shoot you through concealment.
With prejudice if I need to!

Point is to understand what is ballistic “cover” vs what is concealment.
A lesson that I remember from Army basic training, almost 50 years ago. Camouflage, concealment, and cover. All 3 can hide you, but only one stops a bullet.

My son had a science project for 6th grade. Private school so gun stuff is not off limits. We tested the length of the gun barrel on penetration through drywall using multiple .22 LR caliber firearms using the same ammo. So the variable was barely length. As usual, results were inconclusive. But we were getting .22 to go through as many as 10-12 sheets of drywall. (I don’t remember what thickness of drywall but I think it was a standard size.)

We were out on the BLM one afternoon last Fall, when it wasn’t 100 degrees outside, and I had brought my, new at the time’, 24” R92 for someone else to shoot.
They wanted to see if it would go through a car door. There was an abandoned(like stolen) truck with all the windows shot out( you see these in different desert locations) so they fired off two shots that went through both doors like butter.
Then, I told them to hit the 3/8 thick steel target they had been hitting with a 45 early.
It looked like a crater on the moon

Same here, 15 years of going out on the BLM and haven’t had that issue, yet.
Indoor ranges, been flagged too many times.
Never been flagged at an indoor range…. I generally try to not shoot at my lane neighbors! 
Out on BLM land, I’ve never had a crossfire issue as of yet, though I can definitely see how it might happen.
I will make sure I’m not aiming East
