A man I know bought a 10mm G20, a box of Buffalo Bore, and a chest rig when he was getting ready to take a hiking trip in Alaska. There was no research, just what the guy behind the counter in North Carolina recommended.
As I recall he never test fired it, but loaded it up with the Buffalo Bore before heading out. He said it quickly stopped a bear that was charging him. He doesn’t know what Buffalo Bore load he used, but he bought another box when he got back to NC just in case. Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than skilled!
I’m going to see him at a wedding in a couple of months. I’m gonna try to remember to ask him if he skinned it like the guys in the linked article.
“Brett and Andy knew they had to skin the bear to turn the hide and skull over to the Alaskan authorities”
Hmmm if I’m not carrying a Rifle or 12 gauge….I’m starting at 10mm but can raise that if need be. From left to right….460S&w…44 magnum…10 mm. I’ll always have the 10 on me. When in Michigan hiking I take the Anaconda.
Wow! Now I know why a buddy who went on a fishing trip last year in Alaska was handed a similar Glock 10mm.
I thought of bringing one when I went camping last month in Yosemite.
I carried a 357mag for many years when for what evereason I couldn’t carry a rifle. That 686 has seen alot of miles. 180gr buffalo bores
Not optimum but if my wife had to grab it, she could use it confidently.
I always told people to carry what your comfortable with, if you cant hit crap with a 44 mag, then it does you no good. If you dont get a CNS shot…..
I rarely carried a handgun in bear country. Usually a rifle but if I did carry a pistol, that 686 was just fine. I had 44’s but that smith was smooth. Still is
