I posted in another thread about a get home bag, how many of you have a get home bag? If so, what do you keep in it? Included is a pic of my “winter version” it has thermal underwear in it. Not pictured are my spare winter boots, gloves, jacket, and insulated bib overalls. I have a change of clothes, plus extra socks, and underwear, extra glasses, lighters, matches, my notepad trauma kit water collection and purification, cordage, knife and sharpener, ammo for all my cc pistols, some ramen, a tarp, an emergency blanket, and a machete. I live in a more rural area, so I tailored my bag for moving in woods/farm land and possibly staying the night in the woods. Any suggestions for me?
What do you have on hand at home for actual drinking water? I realize you wouldn’t just have it sitting there in your bag, but maybe something you can grab on the way out the door. With that in mind, maybe a couple canteens to be able to put it in too.
I agree water is a prime resource, you can go without food much longer than water.
Theres a life straw in the picture. I generally keep a gallon of water in my truck during summer, and like 24 oz with me full in the truck in winter.
I saw that, just figured having as much water that you can grab would be good and the straw as a last resort.
Oh, for sure. I figure that the amount I have is good in the summer. I tried keeping a gallon in my truck in winter, but I end up forgetting about it.
Gotcha. I have a bunch of bottled stuff that gets used and replinished often enough, but also have three 7 gallon containers stored away that I dump and refill every 5 1/2 months.
Ive been trying to figure out a way to use something like a life straw, in a fashion similar to a britta water pitcher filter… anyone seen anything thats actually like it on the market??

Something like this? Not sure it would filter creek water but I wonder of you could make one with a life straw?
Well shoot! Should have looked here first.
Rofl right!! I was thinking making it for a water bag, so you could fill multiple containers in one go… that way the inside of your containers arent contaminated with dirty water…
Oh… they have water bags too. Look at that huge container. You could hog the clean water and make money off the apocalypse!
FYI: you need more water during winter. I like the LifeStraw idea.
I bought the Sawyer mini filter kit, haven’t used it yet
They have bottle filters too.
My “10 mile walk” is 800 miles. Pounds may equal pain, but if things go so sideways that I have to walk it, a 3-day bag and some granola bars isnt gonna get it done.
If I can’t run my truck and I have to walk, I’m gonna need the full expedition kit. If I want to get home in under 3 months, I’d probably have to take @wildrose’s advice about “acquiring” a horse.
I like your level of think-ahead-ness @Henry4
My knees don’t do “bike” anymore, especially on rough terrain. My backside, however, will do “horse”
Amen to that.
I recently added a “get home bag”, to my preparedness system; and updated my other “get home bag”, I keep at work/office.
Trying to balance how quickly I can grab and go, vs if I need to pause, pack a few more items into it or not - or accept it as ready as is.
I think one of the benefits, is being more organized, having a designated sack to use to carry more items, if need be - throw a few more items inside it if I have a minute to spare. I figure the bag serves as a reminder in an emergency, break down event, and save me some time since it already is prepacked.
I had a kayak trip emergency in 2025, but managed to self rescue out at 12:30AM, at night.
That got me thinking, in that there are some times I really need to travel lightest as possible (literally). That day, I carried only very limited support items.
It forced me to create and now carry a “pocket kit”, flashlight, and a means to purify water. Looking into ways to save and keep dry my cel phone for when I’m on the water.
Funny thing is, my new pocket kit has to fit inside my cargo pants side pocket. The perfect size pouch I’ve now been using - I found on the USCCA store:
Their store added a new flashlight and dry bag I’m “eye balling”.
I do not have a get home/emergency bag.
However, I always have a regular as well as recently acquired trauma first aid kit (https://www.mountainmanmedical.com/product/the-yellowstone-trauma-kit-mountain-man-medical/?srsltid=AfmBOoouglemHTqHU8V1rze4Kr5rwt7PknIDKuByzZu1iLcu4sGiXGbl). I also always keep a flashlight, Para cord, bicycle air pump, tire gauge, 4x4 chocks, jumper cables, a Liberty and/or a Hornady brand lock box and oil absorbing pads in my car.
I carry plenty of water if going on a trip, but just a bottle or two if going out shopping for the day. I also have a couple bottles of wine and corkscrew if going on a trip.
@Burdo
This is my favorite kind of topic besides firearms but I haven’t seen the subject addressed here so I kept my mouth shut. Youtube has beat the subject to death but there are still some good things on there,
I run scenarios through my brain for everything. 9/11/2001 got me going in this direction.
Anyway, carry on. I will be watching this thread. ![]()
