Good morning,

I am a fan of S&W Shield plus chambered in 9mm. 3.1 barrel length holding 13 +1. Go to a range and try out other brands, see what fits you. My thinking is this, if it’s not comfortable in your hand as soon as you pick it up it probably never will be.

welcome

the S&W Shield is a good choice

as for caliber that’s up to you, see what recoil you can handle

also look at the laser option that’s built in to the frame, its sweet and quicker to see than a red dot

[you don’t have to hunt for it]

My first suggestion is move out of NYC. As far as EDC depend on you everyone is different. But just starting out keep it simple 9mm compact , make Glock orSig. as good as any place to start go to a range and rent to try different ones and choose that way.

Outstanding! Congratulations on earning your CPL!

Choosing your first pistol can be tricky because everyone has recommendations based on their preferences. Personally, I recommend 9mm, and I think the Glock 43X is an excellent choice for everyday carry.

My best advice is to find a range that rents firearms and try several. Look for one that fits your hand comfortably, lets you manage recoil, and helps you make accurate follow-up shots.

No one can choose your firearm for you. Listen to advice, but don’t get overwhelmed by opinions or caught up in the caliber debate. Choose a firearm you can confidently control, are comfortable carrying, and will practice with regularly.

Try the Sig Sauer P 365 X. Go to a range and rent one and give it a try then try other guns. See which one fits you and you feel comfortable shooting. Make your decision off of that.

I know this is an older post but if you can’t hit something with the first 2 shots why the F do you need 14 , sorry that is how many innocent bystanders get killed get a revolver 5 shot S&W with the crimson trace I bought one for my kid it can shoot 38’ similar to a 9 and 357’s more powerful, I like the larger rounds but she hates them and can shoot the 38’s just fine!

Incase the bad guy is on drugs, they won’t know they are hit with the first 3. Shot placement is always key.

@Peter265 Welcome to the community! Congrats on your permit. You will have many options for EDC. I have a Sig P365 9mm and it fits my needs, and everyone is different. Great input from the community, and if you have a range that offers variety of firearms try them and go to the gun store and look at their inventory. Be aware of States gun laws, magazine capacities. What’s your choice, semi-auto pistol or revolver.

Just a little story to reinforce what has been said above. About 10 years ago I took a friend shopping for his first pistol. He had previously shot a few handguns in different calibers. We shopped for 9mm for starters. My basic advice was it had to feel good in the hand, and the sights had to be lined-up, or very close as soon as he pointed it. We handled many, but only shot six. He was hitting pretty good and liked a Glock 19. Me, a Springfield XD.
Almost out of ammo and turning in the last gun, the clerk handed us a Ruger SR9c and said we didn’t try this one. Both of us liked it and shot slightly better with it. He bought it, and I found a like new one a year latter.
Red Dots have come a long way since then and many professionals and competitors are using them. I call that a clue. So, a Red Dot ready pistol would be a wise choice.

I just picked up another, a C&H XL Duty for my PDP Pro :smiling_face_with_sunglasses: red dots are game changers

First I think your reply is on the rude side, there’s no need to question why I prefer to carry a 9mm with 14 rounds and the use of a curse word in your reply is uncalled for as well. I carry what I feel comfortable with and practice with it as well weekly at the range.

Bad guy may have friends as well, and I’m pretty sure having extra rounds was never something anyone’s complained about, except maybe the perp..
