This right here is why joining the US military is the worst decision anyone can do because it will set you up for a lifetime of poverty. This skills you learn are not transferable to the private sector and if you do try to transfer those skills you will end up like this guy.

LOL, um, yeah. Talk to my relatives and others that I know that were in the services. They are doing quite well, and they are not committing criminal acts.

My son was intel USMC/NSA, then went civilian starting 6 figures working from home. Very good at what he did, became an NCO and trained others..,.and I’ll leave it at that. Best wishes for your son. Cyber is the present and the future. Make sure he gets away and “touches grass” from time to time, as those monitors can suck you in.

I was required to get an IT industry security certification in 2009 when I was working in the DoD IT arena as a contractor. My certification is very outdated by the standards of today, and I am retired, but I still get numerous inquiries weekly for IT security positions all over the country, or even remote work. The salaries mentioned are well over $100k. The demand is real and the jobs exist.

Hmm… I should probably alert my son that pursing Cybersecurity training while in the Army is a waste of time, since you know, we have no practical use for that in the “real world”..

Depending on which certificate he is looking to get it’s probably just a $50 book and $100 test, I hardly view 4+ years of ones life worth that value. Furthermore as someone who currently works in Tech his only value is if he has military security clearance, which for some reason so many who serve in the Military exit without. Please tell your son that Military Security clearance is the only thing the private sector is going to care about when he is looking for a job. And that is only if the job is with a company that has Military contracts. I have interviewed multiple vets with Military tech experience and have only hired one who had Security Clearance. But then I work in healthcare AI which I have yet to meet a vet who has experience in so they generally don’t qualify for the position they are interviewing for. But if any vet with security clearance interviews I don’t care if they have the the technical skills or healthcare knowledge as long as they have clearance. And that is because they can enter a Government secure Data Center where our servers are hosted which I am unable to do.
