Either this, or he did acid, or had undiagnosed mental illness. I cannot imagine another reason to āabscond from flight into the USā and willingly go into NoKo. What does everyone else think?

I am sure he did not think, really, just acted. Since he was looking at getting sent back to the US and doing some time. Then NK figured out he knew nothing, was not going to be worth anything, and just a drain.

I agree with your take. Also almost feel sorry for the guy. You have to be really useless and probably also incredibly annoying to be rejected by the North Koreans. They donāt get too many opportunities to use American soldiers as political pawns.
Though the way the U.S. has been giving up huge assets and really evil prisoners in order to free low level Americans it wouldnāt completely surprise me if they traded some ICBM plans for this guys release:/
