Today, we are going to talk about one of those topics that comes up quite a bit when discussing self-defense. You know that age-old question, “What do you do if you have to fight more than one person at a time?” I can’t count the number of times that I just sat and listened to tough talk and crazy fight stories. Some are real, and some are beyond fake when fighting multiple attackers comes up.
Dealing with Multiple Attackers
It has become somewhat easy to read between the fluff when a guy says, “What I usually do when outnumbered is this.” As a rule of thumb, when a story starts with “what I usually do,” there is a good chance you are about to catch an ear full of nonsense.
When someone tells you they usually “take out the biggest, strongest, badass guy in the group first,” that “usually” means that it never happened.
I Post this because MOST of you folk’s are USUALLY ARMED so this article may be a moot point. This is just more an exercise for your mental toolbox.
Personally I don’t go ‘empty handed’ anywhere. I don’t usually carry a knife for hand to hand combat (I don’t DO hand to hand these days) I’m of an age and Physical condition if pressed into a street battle, and make NO mistake a scenario such as this could be a LIFE or DEATH BATTLE. I will just pull Iron. I now carry a Collapsible Baton EVERYWHERE if jumped because I had my head up my axx and wasn’t paying attention (which also these days will never happen) but the baton creates a ‘distance’
between the attacker(s) and myself. The ‘Theory’ I give myself is the Baton can create a space where I can Pull Iron and end the Battle before it starts. As I stated above the days of ‘Toe to Toe’ confrontations are LONG gone for me.
The other thing is Multiple attackers in these day’s of Craziness I won’t HESITATE to shoot my way out of an attack. You FAFO with me you get the LEAD. Plain and simple. Multiple room temperature DRT’s when eventually the Man shows up is usually an indicator of the seriousness of the now ended situation. What I would suggest to you good people is HAVE A PLAN for the Aftermath. Goes without saying call 911, then the Uscca lawyer(s) you have on speed dial etc etc.
Do you Holster your weapon? (after scanning the area for other threats)
Do you wish to get outta Dodge and call from a safe space?
Once again all of this may be moot because the chances of Multiple (unarmed) attackers in my mind would be extremely rare most idiots that are Crim’s are usually armed these days. In Cactus Junction now I take all threats seriously (why you may be asking did I just state that? of course you would Don). Well, in the old days you see a kid or kids approaching you and they have their best tough guy walk, strut whatever you KNOW there is trouble a foot coming. If your Spider Scenes are screaming you will be alert and start taking a defensive posture BEFORE you let them get to close to act and catch you off guard. THERE ARE NO INNOCENT KIDS in my mind anymore.
You SEE the look, feel the vibe they give off and put a course of action into play before they get the jump on you.
The other reason I say all this is in some areas the ‘Protests’, MOB Mentality flare up’s can happen all of a sudden. That is why PAYING ATTENTION while driving or walking is essential. Folk’s have said have a route (don’t take the same route somewhere every time) Have alternate routes in your mind if a street is blocked all of a sudden and for God’s sakes don’t keep driving into the sh!t if you see anything unusual happening a couple of blocks in the direction you are heading. The ‘Drive right through it’ mentality will get you dead. FAST. Being in Albuquerque myself I don’t have this problem because the city itself is a DEAD ZONE for me. Everything I want to do (even the Jobs) is in the GREEN ZONE now. That’s not to say I am trouble free so I take my time and access all situations
While I am at this I might as well mention if ‘Followed’ (either from a Road Rage incident or someone just took you for an easy mark DON’T DRIVE DIRECTLY HOME!)
Now the unusual for me is at night/over night all my Police sub station’s are closed now so going to the Man for safety when the Man ain’t there is out for me. Hopefully with this New Administration in play they might think to hire some Cops soon…don’t hold yer breath.
So, to end this (FINALLY!) Situational Awareness up at all times. There isn’t a quick run (unarmed) to the store for Milk run for me anymore. Even my local Walmart parking lot has had ‘Trouble’. so Act Accordingly folk’s the life you save may be your own (or your Familiy’s).

I’d not think this truly applies to you @Don102 but I have seen quite a few others who seem to assume they will never be caught by surprise. It is very difficult and likely down right unhealthy to stay in condition orange all the time from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to sleep.
I suspect my situational awareness is at least better than average. It has gotten me out of several dangerous situations. But even I get caught off guard from time to time by someone who got into my bubble before I realized it.
So I think having some hand to hand tools is important. Even if you see the problem coming you might not have the time and space to get to a more effective tool before the problem attempts to impose their will on you. It is a good idea to have a practiced plan on how to make that time and space.
I understand, I’ve trained in ‘Krav’ for many years.
I was the guy who got jumped twice last year (or was that the
last two years>) I put them both down for the count without drawing my sidearm.
I’m just saying the scenario’s this dude is talking about *Face-off’s with
Multiple Attackers (ALL UNARMED SEEMS HIGHLY UNLIKELY THESE DAYS).
EVERY Tool in your tool box is important (whatever you’re comfortable using @ the time.
And for clarification it’s CONDITION YELLOW MOST OF THE TIME. THAT’S HEALTHY.
If you haven’t noticed the Posts from our Brothers N Sisters here lately maybe you missed some of our people carry the minute they get dressed till they go to bed, some have Fire Power on near their Night stands/Beds, some have a BED HOLSTER. We carry in our vehicles, We have Truck (car) guns. If you can manage hand to hand combat ‘Good for you’.
Always tough to argue with. If you ain’t got your situational awareness working and watching 7/24 you’re probably gonna find SHTF is real. Remember when I was young, long time ago, and I would flip someone off in a heart beat. Today I just suck it up and remember what’s really worth the fight.
Do love when people (keyboard warriors) talk about what they’re gonna do because they saw a video once.
I just see a lot of people post the “I’ll just draw my gun to solve the problem. I don’t need no other skills or less lethal tools.” I read too many posts and see too many of my neighbors who think they are good to go simply because they have a gun. In many cases without any training or real practice on how to use it let alone how to retain it or fight their way to it if they have to.
As you point out there are lots of situations that don’t require or potentially don’t allow (legally or physically) using a firearm. There are places where it isn’t legal to carry and situations that don’t need deadly force to resolve. I can imagine a lot of situations where a person might run into 2 or 3 or more drunks or road ragers or whatever in a situation where a firearm can’t be used or gotten to in time.
Having a few physical moves planned and practiced could be the difference between walking away or laying on the ground with your head kicked in. The weaker a defender looks the more likely any resistance from them is going to surprise attackers. There are some situations where a firearm is the only good answer. But there are lots of other situations where it is not the best answer or even an option.
If you are not prepared and trained with and without a firearm you could end up in a really bad situation. I don’t care who you are we all let our guard down once in awhile and get surprised . I’m just glad I live in a area where I don’t have to be on high alert all the time. Prepared yes but still lucky enough to live in a quite little country town.
The wife stepson and I all train together. We train a lot. I’ve got us all body armor and AR-15s. If it hits the fan I’ve done everything within my means to have us prepared. Only thing I’m short on is ammo and I’m fixing that a thousand rounds a time.
Pretty good basics in the article. Get off the ‘X’, Line them up, Take one at a time…
My Krav Coach adds some psychology to the equation. He talks about Sights and Sounds. If #2 see’s #1 bleeding his plan may change, if #1 hears #2 screaming in pain it will effect what he does next. I think the only thing I would add is Make Them React to You, get off the defense as soon as possible and start your attack/retreat.
That is the primary point my instructors emphasize.
Another point is to use the environment you are in to your advantage. Furniture, vehicles, doors, etc.can be used to limit the number of attackers that can reach you. Other items in the environment might also provide easy to reach improvised weapons or distraction devices.
