Just for fun, are you watching a movie about D-Day on this 77th anniversary? Which one?

  • The Longest Day
  • Saving Private Ryan
  • Band of Brothers
  • something else?

The Americanization of Emily … First D-Day movie I ever saw. I knew Omaha was in Nebraska (thank you Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom), but couldn’t understand how it could be a beach or related to France.

This movie reminds me of my childhood.
I played more USA :us: vs. Nazis than
Cowboys and Indians.

The Longest Day for me.

I like Longest Day because it tries to hard to take a comprehensive view of the operation, covering all the nations (including France and Germany), planning, paratroopers, landing craft, different beaches, etc. It’s almost like a documentary with an A-list cast. I also like it because I can watch it with my children, and I don’t have to explain why he can’t use words that the Army and Navy use.

Last night I discovered the TV movie “Ike: Countdown to D-Day” starring Tom Selleck. Low budget, no action scenes, and some historical inaccuracies, but still an interesting take on the politics and planning leading up to D-Day. It wasn’t on my list because I’d never seen it until last night.

I ended up watching Bridge at Remagen instead.
Lots of explosions but interesting focus on humanity on both sides—the tired Lieutenant Hartman, the ambitious Major Barnes, the enterprising Sergeant Angelo, Germans defying Hitler’s orders and deserting their posts as Americans make their push to take the bridge.
