Army’s New XM7 Rifle Ignites Debate on Ammunition Capacity

The realist in me hears that, and would agree if it weren’t for the literal billions of 5.56 ammo already stockpiled in the civilian market.

Gonna be a long fight before we run out of ammo. :man_shrugging:

Not to mention .223 exists.

That’s why we buy ammo before we need it.

Total weight, for one cartridge of 5.56 w/62gr bullet is 12 grams, making 30 rounds 360 grams/12.7 oz. The 6.8 cartridge w/135gr bullet is 20 grams, making 20 rounds 400 grams/14.11 oz. That is about 1.4 ounces difference in total weight w/o accounting for the slight difference in the weight of the mags. For 30 rounds of the 6.8 cartridge (600 grams/21.16 oz), the weight difference is about 8.5 ounces compared to 30 rounds of 5.56. That would make carrying 10 mags of 30-round 6.8 more than 5 pounds heavier than 5.56.

[edit] Six 30-round mags of 6.8 would weight about the same as 10 30-round mags of 5.56.

Again though, if you’re able to remove an enemy combatant from the battlefield with the first hit vs needing multiple hits, the loss in capacity is negligible.

I know this is about ammo but I read the scope developed for the rife isn’t working out right, solders wishing for the older scopes. Wish I could find the article. The actual test will be on the battlefield for this rifle where things will happen that nobody thought of. One thing I noticed does anybody know how picky is this new rifle when dirty, is it easy to maintain?

If this was the case, I’d be willing to take that gamble. It seems to me that a 1 or 2 shot DRTout of a 6.8 would be net positive compared to an 8 hit-and -still-coming-at-me-out-of-a-5,56 situation. But that’s just me…

Or just use Incendiary😉

There’s some argument I’ve heard about using incendiary ammo in combat,….

But I just read through the Geneva Convention article about it and it states “Civilians”

So you’re good to hit an active combatant with them,….

Carry on.

Or….

I was neither arguing for nor against, just stated the weight/capacity variances.

I’m too old out of shape and fat to last long on the front line.

I get the weight argument, rucking more weight for the same lethality would absolutely suck!

However rucking the SAME (yeah yeah 20% less ammo) weight for 2-3x MORE lethality, I’d be okay with that.

1 shot DRT vs 2, 3, a dozen direct hits before an enemy finds their god?

I’ll take the heavier round.

The 6.8 is a compromise, flatter shooting, higher velocity, and lighter weight than the existing 7.62 (.308) round, yet it’s more effective than the 5.56 that has been our standard since the 70s

I’m not gonna convert my Tavor7 to 6.8, however if they release one chambered in that cartridge,… I might add another bull pup to my avatar!

That’s definitely an option but it seems that, at $12,99/6 rounds, filling a 20 round magazine is going to get a tad expensive.

If comes down to it, where these rounds are going to solve the problem, immediately, then donating blood or semen will pay for it🤣

Maybe, if you used the Battlefield Ammo (all the time).
I don’t know about anybody else but I used FMJ for practice
and Training purposes, I also had Green Tip for Armor and
.556 NATO (a Hollow point round) for when it REALLY would count. NATO occupied the Plate Carrier pouches, the Green in pouches around my waist and the FMJ in my Mussette bag
or my pack.

After over 24 gallons of blood, I am done with donating blood; semen, unless they take it from my wife’s …, that is not happening.
