A chain is only as strong as its weakest link - the WEAKEST link in a firearm is its cartridge case. The .277 SIG-Sauer “Fury” - now adopted by the Army as its standard service round, with a SIG-designed rifle for it - uses a HYBRID case, to handle the 80,000 psi pressures this cartridge can generate, and power its bullets to over 3,000 fps. This is made up from a brass body and steel base, connected by an aluminum washer. This makes me wonder how other rounds might perform with such a case at the usual 50k - to 60K levels, especially the Ackley-treated 6mm and 7mm I’ve proposed. Personally, I anticipate serious safety issues with this case. P.S. - The Marines are sticking to the .223. Time will tell.

From what I’ve been reading lately, the Marines are smart in this case (pun unintended). I’m seeing pix of folks buying these new Sigs for about $4k, with wildly offset improperly torqued handguards and rough machining, which has me question how the rest of the rifle and their company as well is running.

I’ve predicted serious problems for this new setup - especially with the hybrid cases used for the .277 - case separation would lead to fatalities and near-fatalities at the pressures the .227 generates. At $4K, the price for the rifle is outrageous - the one POSITIVE feature is its adjustable stock for length-of-pull, especially for women and militant munchkins, like myself.

You can get a low end AR for 10% of the cost, and it’ll come with an adjustable stock..heck, even my Mossberg 500 has 6 positions.
Best thing about Sig these days imo is they’re next to a good dragstrip. New England Dragway, Epping NH.
Entire acquisition should be cancelled, epic stupid to depend on foreign logistics for any military hardware, let alone changing calibers and firearms for zero reason other than to piss away money. Should have kept 5.56mm and reintroduced the 7.62mm in a battle rifle configuration. This is Obama and Biden defense logistics brain trusts that pushed this through.

The Sig 277 Fury was chosen for the ability to penetrate modern body armor and the superior stopping power beyond 500 meters when compared to the 5.56mm. Is it the right choice? Time will tell.

I read that lately, maybe forever I dunno’, that 50k rounds are fired per kill in battle. Thinking maybe dmr or snipers could make good use of this ammo, but the guy behind the wall doing blind suppressive fire, maybe not so much.

I read that because of all the ammo expended in Vietnam, the M-16 had been re-designed from a full-automatic function to fire in 3-shot bursts, and with a bump in the ejection-port to keep brass from flying in or past a left-hander’s face. TRUE?
No, and yes. The three shot burst mode came with the M-16A2. It was introduced in the 80s because the M16A1 was an uncontrollable ammo wasting device when you engaged giggle mode. Fun, but not at all worthwhile in combat.
The A2 also introduced the Brunton Bump, which helped eject the hot brass in a more forward direction.

Several people deployed in the Iraq War told me if they heard gun fire they ducked until the 30 round burst(s) from AKs ended, then popped up during reload. They also said most of the 30 rounds ended up in the sky.
