If I use my pocketknife to defend myself, it isn’t an assault weapon, but if I use it to attack someone, it is an “assault weapon”, and I will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon, as it is a knife, regardless of size. They need to eat as many turds as it takes for them to die or grow some.

Yeah, the “AR-15 is technically not a military weapon” is an intellectually lazy argument for supporting the 2nd amendment. The proper argument, as somebody mentioned above, is that it doesn’t matter. The 2nd amendment was designed so that a governed body could fight on an even playing field with an oppressive government. In order to do that, you should have access to the same weaponry they would use against you. That weaponry has changed over the years, but the principle behind the amendment stands.

Good points, and I’ll go one further. Being that our founders saw fit to write into the second amendment that we need a well regulated militia to protect the security of our free state, it’s my interpretation that they in fact wanted us, the militia, to exactly have military weapons. What good is a militia defending the security of the state if they don’t have sufficient weapons?

If we must classify weapons like this then you need to look at bullet energy and how rapidly and acurately a skilled person can shoot. Really, nothing else matters - how much damage can you do to how many people in a given time frame. What the gun looks like is irrelevant.

I’m sure a lever action can do okay, but, it’s all relative
compared to a modern semi auto mag fed and users of equal skill, the semi auto removable mag fed is winning every time. That’s why cowboy lever actions aren’t really used by military, police, etc, any more

Muzzle loaders were a military weapon here in the US too
but, well
just like lever actions replaced them because they were better, mag fed semi autos yada yada

If we are going to use a “how rapidly and accurately” as the standard.

Once AR15s will have been declared illegal for conflated reasons, declaring handguns illegal because 90%+ of gun crime involves handguns will be a piece of cake.
