I was at a carbine training session and one of the guys was shooting .300 Blackout suppressed with subsonic ammo. Very quiet, makes shooting a pleasure. Any suggestions from the community on brands and barrel length? There are a range of options out there, have to do some research.
Depends on how much you want to spend honestly. Palmetto State Armory has a decent 300 BO upper/lower. I personally use a Daniel Defense 16" lower/upper.
I bought mine from Bear Creek, no problems
Right, my 556 is from Daniel Defense. I’m more interested in high quality over price.
I made my DDM4 into a carbine because I didn’t want to d*ck around with the ATF. In hindsight I should have waited but I don’t regret it. It’s a sweet shooting carbine. Will get another DDM4 one day. But I really like the.300 Blackout performance.
Thanks. Will look into the DD in .300. The 16" length does give more time for the bullet to spin.
thanks, appreciate your recommendation.
If you already own a vise, torque wrench, and an armorers wrench, then you can pick up the exact parts you want by watching sales. I do not consider assembly very challenging, but I will also say I grew up on a farm where you frequently have to have some mechanic skills.
Palmettostatearmory.com and PrimaryArms.com are a couple of sites I keep up with. Not that you are looking for a lower right now, but I just got an email from Palmetto State that they had their stripped lowers for $29.99 on Monday, 8/5/2024. I find it best to be on their mailing list to catch those one day deals, even though it is a pain in the butt to have your inbox loaded up with stuff you are not interested in right now.
Edit: Primary Arms had a 10-1/2" Faxon 300 Blackout barrel for $109.99 recently.
Aero Precision had a complete 300 Blackout upper for $261.26 (usually $625.00), so you just got to shop 'em till you pick one It is sold out, but you might be able to get on a waiting list …
I admit to not being very handy. Will try to pick up a pre-assembled barrel and handguard, then a good quality bolt carrier group and charging handle. Already have a complete PSA lower.
the 300 bo upper is the same as the standard 5.56 except for the barrel. as long as you use something of your choice that is made to mil specs you should be good, now a lot of company’s are making uppers, lowers, and complete weapons (remember years ago the singer sewing co. made m-16’s for the military using the mil specs), i personally have colt’s, and a couple from PSA. the PSA perform as good as the colt’s. a good multi use barrel length is 16". i have both 16" and 7 1/2"
I have an Aero Precision upper which works very well though I am sure there are better options out there, like those from Daniel Defense.
300blk works really well with barrels in the 10 inch range but then you have to play the nonsensical ATF pistol/SBR games. Could be worth it though if you want to add a suppressor (more stupid games) and still keep the overall length down.
I already paid for the tax stamp on my lower so I can run an SBR legally. Thinking about 14.5", I’d rather have a longer barrel. Everyone seems to like Aero so thanks for the suggestion.
My understanding is that the 300blk was originally designed to be very effective out of a 9 inch barrel so most folks don’t get much benefit from a longer one. Longer will get you a little more velocity which might help some if you want to shoot at lot at longer ranges though that isn’t really what the caliber is designed for.
I have shot 300blk from a 10 inch barrel out to 200 yards with very good results even though I was only using a red dot. It would probably do just fine out to 300 yards. Plus the shorter barrel is much handier for in and around the home defense.
