IMHO the police are not mind readers and don’t know what the persons intentions are with the firearm. This is tragic and I feel for both sides, the victim who was shot and killed and the police who have to live with what they did. I pray for their families. This is a tragedy.

If someone knocks on the door from twilight on I don’t answer.
Need a cup of sugar? I don’t have any.
You’re the police? I will call to verify.

They were at the wrong house--------- brain reading has nothing to do with it. Learning to read MAY have something to do with it-- however! The police will lose NO pay nor face criminal charges-- who got the raw end of the stick??? The VICTIM of cowards!

I always look out my window before answering the door at that time of night. I suggest others do the same. Like I said its tragic and I am not taking sides. Mistakes were made by both parties.

This happened in Northern New Mexico (near the Colorado Border) the Police up there are Holding the line as best they can. This NM ‘Blue/Dem’ state is actively cutting Police budgets. Smaller cities here are woefully understaffed and in my humble opinion UNDERTRAINED. Stuff happens coast to coast when there is interaction between Poe Poe’s and Civilians now a day’s. You see more and more beatings and shootings of unarmed civie’s in Chiraq, LA and Nueva Yorka. It SHOULD be CLEAR @ 11:30 @ night, responding to a domestic call that the house was dark and quiet! Your a cop, act responsibly… If they are all DEAD inside you don’t have to rush and make bad decisions on the fly. The people were asleep (probably). If I were in that situation I would ANNOUNCE LOUDLY! POLICE! Multiple times ! Maybe have my gumball lights ON! Anything I can to make it clear I am a Police Officer and not a bad guy!. I AM a resident outside of Albuquerque, There are NO street lights. I DON’T open my doors EVER after 8 PM! If I see a cop there through my kitchen window I say "Wadayawant!'… I wouldn’t open the doors , I DON’T HAVE TO! (especially brandishing a firearm!). The cops should be smart enough to ask "Are you Mr. Magillacuddy??? No Magillacuddy here man! They should then say “Is this 1515 Mockingbird lane??? No sir, it isn’t, that’s down the road a piece… “We have a call on a domestic disturbance @ 1515 ML”… ‘That isn’t this address officer, this is whatever address, you are @ the wrong house’… Something along those lines. INFORMATION HAS TO BE EXCHANGED! Gone are the days of a cop blustering, threatening, ORDERING US around! They can’t just say OPEN UP! anymore, SCREW THAT! GO TO HELL BUDDY! My house has a Security Outer door (serious business), followed by a Solid wood door (w/ deadbolt/ and Commercial grade door lock and handle, this is then backed up by a steel bar on professionally made mounts lag bolted to the frame (Over kill you may say?) , after this incident I say JUSTIFIED!. You have to be a numbskull answering a door knock and even stupider opening that door w/ a gun in hand in full view of ANYBODY!. You can get DEAD! (obviously!) Now if its the ATF’ers w/ a Koresh mobile I would hopefully be outta the way and on the phone to my USCCA LAWYER before they rammed my doors attempting to gain entrance!. Cause Brother, I will answer aggression with aggression!
Twenty years ago I might have answered the door for a cop. But sadly they are not the Good Guy’s anymore ! (WE ARE!). They make too many errors/mistakes now. Their agenda/Narrative has changed. Many Alphabet agencies now want my Guns! And I AM NOT going to COMPLY!. But I will be civil/ helpful right up until its time to not be. My house is ‘marked’ w/ my address MANY times (Over the garage doors, mailbox out front, and Curb paint. You walk up my drive and the house is auto illuminated, the multiple cameras record like its day light! an LED light by the bell flashes next to a small sign ‘You are being recorded’. If you giggle the handles an audible alarm sounds. You continue to be stupid and I am already @ the door will my 'Hellion”. My family member backs me up w/ her ‘Hellion’.I won’t let these murderous rogue cops try to illegally take my weapons and violate my RIGHTS! (and possibly my family member who I have taken the oath to protect w/ my life!). If she got hurt and I didn’t do EVERYTHING in my power to protect her I couldn’t live w/ myself. These ‘cops’ can apologize to the dead guy’s wife till the moon turns to green cheese but he will forever and always be dead. These Storm Troopers masquerading as cops now will pay the ultimate price for their ILLEGAL actions. This jerk who shot the home owner should FRY!
How many laws did he break? How clearly did he announce his intentions? Where is his lapel cam? Not knowing the particulars but going by the end result both the cop and the home owner made mistakes. But this was the Home Owners house/property. HIS CASTLE! If he chooses to walk around his house w/ an AK47 in a dress and wig that’s his RIGHT! The cop was wrong 100%. And an innocent died. The Uvalde…law enforcement shrank from their duty because they said the wacko had an AR15…wow, um, so did they! Like (48) of 'em. You are getting paid to run TOWARDS the gunfire. Not let innocent children and teachers get massacred. This idiot was too trigger happy! too scared ! He saw a gun and murdered somebody. He obviously didn’t announce himself as a Peace Officer (yeah right) if even the wife shot @ him defending her husband. Most of these people now shouldn’t be cops.
So, NO. I will not open my doors to anybody.

not the first and not the last time… and actually they have a right to be there, even by mistake.

We all trying to discuss it, thinking how to avoid such situation in our lives… it is still too early to blame one of the sides of this incident. So far nobody knows who will lose NO pay nor face criminal charges. No reason to put responsibility on anybody at this moment.

Possibly a big time lawsuit coming to the PD.

Here is the problem I have with this, Apparently I am in the minority here of this opinion.
When your job is bringing force to a situation, you better damn well know you are at the correct location.
In this case the cops were given the correct address. That is a known fact.
I do not know the layout of the area this happened, but I do know pretty much everywhere houses are marked odd on one side of the street and even on the other.
They went to a house on the opposite side of the street from the address they were given.
I just think an extra minute or two could have been spent making sure they were at the right place. Just IMHO and I do look at it as a failing on the LE side.

There have been warrantless searches, where they break in unannounced, that have ended tragically for innocent people because THEY WERE AT THE WRONG location.
This simply should never happen. The onus is on them to make damn sure they are at the right place.

I agree, in these situations they should be certain where they are heading to and knocking.
But as Police they have a right to be there and knock.
They did not raid the house. If the PD version says truth they announced themselves, so even mistakenly knocked to wrong doors, there is no reason to welcome them with handgun in the hand.

As always, series of unfortunate events created a situation that ended up with tragic.

We have these guys crawling all over Salt Lake City, they can purchase these costumes and official looking badges at the uniform store not 4 blocks from here. To me, it’s too easy to put on a uniform, knock on a door and yell “Police”, when actually what you have is thugs pretending to be police.
From the news

So Yelling Police and Banging on my door isn’t as convincing as it once may have been.

So just do not open the door. You have a right to call 911 and verify if they ever been dispatched to your house.

Hi, 911, that sound you hear in the background, that’s my door flying off the hinges and guys in black clothes with their faces covered are barging in. Can you send me some of that 11 minute response time help".

Are we still discussing the OP or analyzing the worst case scenarios?

Both of them. Answering the door with gun in hand regardless of who may be knocking should not end in the police killing an innocent, law abiding citizen. The reason I answer the door with gun in hand is absolutely part of this conversation.

Many here think the police should be counted guiltless whatever they do… Bottom line, officers, get some balls and quit being cowards or find work elsewhere. People keep and bear arms— get used to it officers. IF the victim would have killed the officers in self-defense he’d be in prison the rest of his life. It is time the police play by the same rules as the rest of society.

That rates as one of the most ignorant responses yet.

I agree. Though I’m also aware that if I answer the door with a gun in my hand and it turns out to be LEOs I’m more likely than not going to get shot. So it may be worth devising ways to avoid that situation if possible.

That is one reason why I think no knock warrants should be illegal with the exception of a few extreme imminent threat cases. They create an unnecessarily unsafe situation for civilians and law enforcement.

There was an impersonator to the north of us (canada) was dressed to the hilt AND driving an EXACT copy of a police car-- save the call number-- killed 18 before being stopped… next excuse, please. That is also a common practice of thugs in Omaha NE. BUT, call before defending yourself-- right @Jerzees !!
