Hey guys. I’m not sure if this is in eh right place, but I’m trying to find a chart with description and pics of the many variations from one type of ammo to the next, and what each is good/bad for. We type about it a lot for self defense, but I’m just talking range practice.
One example of what I’m after would be around .22M, also known as .22Mag, .22 Magnum, .22WMR, .22 Min Mag (and there are still more!) That would be step one, Step two is the many acronyms for the actual bullet: CPRN, HP, CPHP, JSP, JHP, TMJ, maybe more?
I know some of them (although am not clear on one over another and generally buy on price), but would like one source to put in a caliber and maybe be able to filter based on requirements. In my head…this should exist. Maybe USCCA has it? Maybe you know of a great site?
For range ammo this is far more often than not the best way to go. Provided you avoid sketchy reloads and really cheap brands with quality control issues. Though some bullet shapes can give some firearms issues.
I am not aware of any one place that has a glossary for all the acronyms. I have come across sites in the past that listed all of the common calibers.
Thanks. i’ve watched quite a few like that. I think that I’m looking for a chart that I can simply refer to when buying, or choosing for one firearm vs. another. Like all of us, I have some that are picky about ammo.
To net it out, while incredible useful, such a chart would cover the state of Florida so probably difficult if not impossible to compile.
Between the technical nuances, the loooooooong history of ammunition and variations and the many marketing terms/names companies have assigned to sometimes the same ammo and projectiles the task of compiling all that info into one chart is at best daunting.
The easiest way to get informed is to look specifically at a need or query and submit it to Google and get specific answers.
I get that. I’m not looking for every possible combination, but the basics, readily available ammo to make better decisions from. Some I own, for instance won’t cycle with lighter bullets or varmint ammo. Others want raw lead while others coated.
I find it hard to believe that this wonderful firearm site can come up with only this help. lol We’re closing on the Subaru forum and blinker fluid…
The craziest thing to me is understanding how many cartridges/firearms are the same exact caliber and “might” even shoot the same exact bullets. Reloaders know a whole more of this stuff than I have figured out. Off the top of my head:
300 Blackout, 30-30, 30-06, 300 Win Magnum, 7.62x51, 308 … are all 30 caliber and all shoot .308 bullets.
Like you said, All the 22’s to include 5.56mm and .223 …
I think you’re asking for way too much and it seems like you’d end up with a lot of unofficial abbreviations that people just tmade up
Like…what the heck is .22M? I don’t think I’ve ever seen anybody write .22M before.
What is .22 Min Mag? Closest I can even think of is .22lr Mini Mag but that’s not a caliber or cartridge that’s a specific brand name of .22lr (and even then not all Mini Mags are the same, there are different grain weights and bullet constructions)
