A whole lot of lead at the range

The range I go to Zion, Illinois has 16 lanes indoors. During the week there are not many shooters but they are busy during the weekend. The back wall is made from recycled aircraft tires and about once a year they clean the lead out of it. Basically they have a private company with a truck that has a huge vacuum machine that sucks out the lead. This year they closed the range on a Monday and closed half the range Tuesday thru Friday. They pulled out 47,000 pounds of lead. That’s 23 1/2 tons, At .90 cents per pound that is some serious money. Not bad for a weeks of work. God only knows how many brass casings are recovered.

That has to be one big truck!
Off topic, Zion, IL? Do they still have a Piggly Wiggly? :grinning:

Don’t know but I pass a Jewel. They brought in two semis. The range used to be a roller rink.

Wonder how much copper was recovered …maybe 1/4-1/3 of the total weight?

Q: 90 cents per pound of led? How are they getting that price? Usually you get in the teens or less for scrap. The brass I can see getting a better price. But still not up to 90 cents per pound. I’ll have to look this up. If the store is getting that price, good for them.

Have a couple friends that have been plumbers for a long time, and every time they replaced stuff they saved all of the brass.
They said they made a pretty good hall bringing in a truckload this year.

Brass is worth around $1.25 to $2 per pound
Depending.

Led hasn’t been over $.50 a pound in a long long time usually it average around $.40lb

At 0.40 per pound times 47k is $18.8k. Nice bonus for the business not counting the brass is going at $1.25 per pound.

On the internet it had lead at $.90 per pound, since it was on the internet “it must be true”. I never verified it but I do not think we mine lead anymore because of the EPA.

hmmm… thought I saw a report that all lead mines in the US had been shutdown???

Now they mine indoor gun ranges. Whole lot cheaper than moving all that dirt.:joy::joy:
